leatherman sheaths

First I would like to say how happy I am with the leatherman sheath that came with my EU-17 Magnum. This is probabley the most attractive and more importantly (to me at least) functional leather sheath I have ever seen. The leather is thick and has a very nice design along the perimeter of the blade. The stitching is strong and secure and is very neat. Once the knife is inserted, their is absolutely no blade movement inside the sheath. The construction of the sheath makes for a very rigid design. The snap lock is easy to do up and unlock with one hand and even in the dark. Their is a a removable loop on the top of the sheath that accomidates a low ride carry. The belt loop fits very well and makes the knife sit well on either hip. Their is also an X loop on the bottom for tie downs. It really is an incredible sheath.

I have also detailed my satisfaction on the TGB&U on the exchage forum.

My questian is: What can I put on the leather in order to protect it from the elemets?

I think Leatherman sheaths are the bomb! I have owned many and still have 4 which continue to serve me well and like you said the fit and finish is excellent.

I have not felt the need to treat the sheaths. I think Dwayne does that when he makes them... though if you want to make the leather very weather resistent you may try mink oil or some other leather specific protectant... just make sure there are no secret ingredients that will dry the leather out or darkern it more than you want.

Enjoy the sheath, it is going to last a lifetime.

Pictures?

Sorry don't have any pics yet but I hope I will have some soon. Thats for the info about the mink oil.

CAUTION!! I think you do NOT want to use mink oil as it will soften the leather, and allow it to bend and lose shape... check with Dwayne. I use mink oil 2x a year on my leather jackets, and they last for many years, but a different application. look into it first

Yup, that's why I chose that design for Leatherman to make for the knife. I chose the border tooling too :)

The more you talk about the knife, the more I regret selling it ;)

Aw well, you'll put it to better use than me!

You could allways send the knife & sheath to me & I will make a kydex sheath to go over the leather sheath to protect it from the elements. :D

Just kidding.

I think if you go to a saddle shop or shoe store they may be able to help you?

I put saddle soap on my boots or neatsfoot oil?

Thanks for the offer Mr. brown but I want to keep this one under my pillow for now. :D Thanks Luopo, you really know how to pick a sheath. The tooling pattern looks great. Luopo, I finished thanking you properly in the TGB&U.

Hey Peter, Wax it. No oils or saddle soaps, some of he products like Sno Seal are great, so is Kiwi hard polish, neutral only black is too soft. The last thing you want to use is something that penetrates the leather and soften it. Shoes and Jackets are screaming for softners though. What you need is a protective coating, I use Fiebings Leather Balm with Atom wax most often and it leaves a nice mellow sheen with a protective finish, what you really want to do is protect it from UV light as well, and the wax does that. When the leather starts looking dull just give it a light coat of wax, brush it in well and buff with a soft cloth. Dont forget the brushing, it not only gets the wax in those depressions it also takes away excess wax. Think coat, not penetrate. Uh, on second thought.....

That being said, I also do a wax/oil penetrated sheath that seems to actually somewhat harden the leather, and makes it very water resistant, inside and out. One is being field tested by my buddy Wookie over in the Netherlands, now that is a good harsh environment testing area! :D

Uhm, kydex covered leather....... That boy just aint right ;)

Peter La,

I've heard of great work of Dwayne . . . But until I got one of my own, man it's really LOVELY! (MY ENG. IS SIMPLY NOT GOOD ENOUGH TO EXPLAIN THIS)

My Force One Sheathe recently arrived from leatherman and I'm really happy with it.

Wish I could post pics of it.

His work really is as great as everyone says.

Thanks everyone. It seems that we all love leatherman's sheaths. They really are incredible. I have some Kiwi polish and will apply this to the sheath as soon as I can.

Thanks everyone for the information. I appreciate it.
