I love my Ps4, dont get me wrong, But ive had to send 4 back because the scissors spring broke. No way do I abuse them, just cut fingernails and thread with them.I think they need a better system for the spring. What say you?

This is a known issue. Mrs. Powernoodle's PS4, which lived in her purse and almost never got used, also had a scissor spring spontaneously break. Fortunately, Leatherman has a 25 year warranty, but they should correct this problem. Perhaps it has been corrected.

I had a Style PS with the same issue. The scissor spring broke with no use, just opened the scissors and there it was. Went to Leatherman Warranty, who returned a PS4 instead with no explanation. It has the same kind of spring, so I don't really trust it. Frankly, I think it's a poor design.

My Style PS scissors broke for the 3rd time. Everytime it broke I sent to LM warranty and they replaced it. Broke again today without using at all. Just sent it back to LM warranty.

Generally speaking this issue occurs when the steel for a spring is left too hard after the Heat Treatment. I personally think the design of the spring is superior to Victorinox since in theory it should be stronger. Of course it is not easily replaced like the Victorinox ones. Companies that produce a lot of slip Joints and or lockbacks likely would not have an issue tempering the springs properly in order to avoid these issues since the springs used in those knives work off the same principal, Leatherman is not one of these companies. My best guess is they aren't bringing down the hardness level enough, or they aren't leaving the springs in heat soak long enough to properly draw out the hardness throughout the entirety of the spring.

I can tell you that they do not all suffer from this issue. I've had my own for around 6 years 5 of which it was in my pocket daily. The scissors were one of the most used tools on mine and I've yet to have the spring break. Knock knock ;)

Which model do you have? There are several with that spring action. I noticed that the spring on the returned PS4 scissor seems to be slightly thicker than on my busted PS. Can I hope it's an improved version?

Mine is the PS4, sorry I didn't specify as that was what the OP was about. Mine has quite a thin spring and a date stamp of 2007 if that helps. My guess is I was lucky enough to get one with a good spring.

That's true, but the OP was joined shortly by others, including me, with similar tales of failure by the same design scissors springs on other keychain Leathermen.
Hm. Your PS4 predated mine by several years, so it was probably the original spring, assuming they ever changed it. But you are right, other people did wind up with durable copies. For all I know, mine might be one of the good ones. I just haven't used it yet.
