Yesterday, I received a (like-NEW) Leatherman Supertool that I had traded a fellow forumite my (self-customized) REKAT Pioneer I for, and this Supertool has to be one of the most under-rated, least talked-about, multi-tools on the market! This is a VERY sturdy, well-made, well-engineered tool that I have already found to be pretty handy. It also makes a great companion to my little Leatherman Micra!

I'm so happy with this LM Supertool that I just felt that I HAD to share my joy with my friends here at BF.:).

Ah yes, :D a man after my vote. As I've said many, many
times in the past the original supertool is ment to work and
work it does. It is so good leatherman had to take it off the
market to seel the supertool 200  (a good tool in it's
own way) Me? I bought up 3 more original supertools
while I could I like them that much :)

Hi glockman99 and Tightwad :)

I have a Wave and a Swisstool, both of which are pretty expensive tools, however I've recently seen VERY cheap second hand Supertools advertised on Ebay (around $20-40) which seem extremely good deals to me indeed ! The Wave seems to be an ideal urban carry 'light use' tool, while the Swisstool, a heavier weight, solid but 'shiny' and 'slippy' item ;) I know your feeling about the Swisstool Tightwad.

What I ideally need is tough all round multi-tool like Supertool, which can be abused a little and not be treated aswell as the Wave and Swisstool. For $20, who cares right ?

What are your thoughts ? Is this a good idea ? Is the Supertool up to the task ?

Also, as I'm currently living in Bangkok, how easy would it be to get a Supertool on ebay via the US ?? They don't seem to ship outside mainland US.

Thanks for your time and possible advice and sorry glockman99 if I haven't given you chance to unpack and use your ST :)

The SuperTool is an excellent multitool, IMO. I've had mine for about 6 years and it still gets used quite often around the house. I had bought a Wave, but found it too "lightweight" for my requirements and traded it off. I went back to carrying my SuperTool, until I made a change to the SOG TiNi Powerlock. :D My SuperTool isn't on the back burner, though. It is still my favorite Leatherman tool. ;)

I started out with the Supertool and keep coming back to it. I like it better than the other multitools on the market. I like the original better than the Supertool 2000. I have put mine through alot of abuse and it has held up very well.

I have had a LM Wave in the past, and to me, the Supertool LOOKS like it could stand-up to alittle more "abuse" than the Wave, due to its' heavier construction, but then, I don't "abuse" MY tools and knives.

As far as shipping to Bangkok from a purchase at eBay, I have no idea, but I do believe that SOME eBay sellers DO ship out of the USA. Prior to bidding on an item, send them an emal to ask if they DO ship to Bangkok, and what the shipping charges would be. If you can buy a LM Supertool for $20, by all means buy it, but I doubt if you'll find one THAT cheap, and I'm pretty sure that the shipping charges would add at least another $20 to the final price.

Unlike glockman I do "abuse" my working tools daily.

The Leatherman Supertool earns it's keep everyday or
I can't afford to carry it. I work the snot out of my work
knives and that poor supertool. It's loose as a goose from
wear and nicked and beat all to hell but I wouldn't trade
it for anything else:D It's so tough it's outlasted 3 work
knives that broke. :p

I also have an original Leatherman Supertool that my dad bought in the USA about 3 or 4 years ago. It is one of the sturdiest I have seen, and has earned its place in my emergency/survival kit. I just find it too big and heavy for edc.

ThorTso - just wanted to say that I like your signature saying...
(Dis vir seker die waarheid in Suid Afrika!!!)

Thanks for your replies...
I'll definitely keep my eyes on ebay for possible bargains. Although maybe the huge markets in Bkk may yield one some day ??

Tightwad, Glockman ...

Whilst out shopping yesterday I saw a Leatherman Supertool in a shop window with the pliers deployed.....OUCH.....those handles sure look sharp. Do they not cut into your hands when you use them ??

The Wave and the supertool 200 both have rounded handles which must make for more comfortable use.

Is this not a good enough reason to go for the 200 instead ?

Thanks & regards.

I just bought a Supertool 200 and it is a solid tool! If I don't ever loose it it should last me for life! The lock on this tool is also neat and gives a very confident "click" when locknig up!;)

The edges of the handles are rounded on MY Supertool just enough to where they don't cut into MY hands while using the tool, but the Wave handle IS more comfortable; However, I don't mind trading alittle comfort for the superior strength of the Supertool over the Wave.

As far as "going for the 200 instead" goes; I traded an old REKAT pocketknife for the Supertool, so I really didn't have much of a choice...However, I am TOTALLY satisfied with MY Supertool.

The ST200 is a fine tool. I use mine almost everyday and have no complaints at all. It is built like a safe.

The tool layout in the original supertool does an awful lot
to make the handles more comfortable. They spread the force
out over the tools when you grip hard. While the ST 200 uses
rounding to make the tool even more comfortable..

The main reason I like the orginal Supertool over the 200 is the
mechanical simplicity of the orginals lock. .........lift a blade to
unlock the other. The 200 , on the other hand, is more complex using
piviots ,levers, bars and such to unlock the blades.

Nah, not for me.
Just something to break on a tool I use and abuse..:D
