Leatherman Surge: First Impressions

I bought a Leatherman Surge today at Target. I wanted to get one with a Leather Sheath but everyplace I looked at them they only had them with the Nylon Sheath.

So after looking everyplace for a Surge with a leather sheath and not finding any I go back to Target to buy one.

I pay for it and head out to the car were I open it right away to check it out.
My first thought were this thing is big! Sure I could see the size of it in the blister pack before I bought it, but once I got it in my hand it really seemed large.

I opened the blades, played with the all the other tools. Everything seemed to work just fine. I start to wonder how to change the saw blade. I got the saw blade out and look for the file.

There is no file!

I look in the sheath for it. Not only is the file not in the sheath, but it's not even the right sheath! It's a nylon sheath, but it does not have the extra pockets in it.

Now I'm starting to wonder what is going on. I know I seen the file in a plastic little case in one of the blister packs when I was at Target the first time looking for a surge with a leather sheath. When I come back the second time to buy it I just took the first Surge I seen on the shelf.

I go back in the store and explain the trouble and tell them I want to get a different one. I go back to the leathermans and start removing them from the cardboard they are wraped in so I can see better what sheath is in the bottom of the package.

Only two out of the six had the right sheath (the one with the extra pockets) and the file included with it.

I do the exchange and head back out to the car. I open the package up and look the sheath over and play with the saw blade and file.

I put it on my belt and we finish some other shopping.

I get back home (45 miles from target!) and take my new Leatherman out to play with it some more. The Scissors and Clip-Point Knife open very hard!

Great! I start to wish I would have checked it out after I did the exchange at the store before we left.

I check out the rest of the Surge and all seems ok, just the Scissors and Clip-Point Knife open hard! They are both on the same handle. I find a couple of T10 bits and loosen up the screws on that handle. They were very hard to loosen. I backed them off just a bit and now the Scissors and Clip-Point Knife open really nice. :)

It's starting to seem like a lot of trouble to go through after just forking out $80 for this thing, but then I remember having to send my first wave back to leatherman because the blade was to tight and I used it that way forever before I sent it in becuase I could not adjust it.

In the end I'm glad it was something I could easily adjust myself.

I like the Nylon Sheath better then I thought I would too. I will give the Surge a work out and update this post later on after I have had time to use it.

One thing I already like about the longer sheath is I can put a 4" cresent wrench in the side pocket. I tried doing this with my Ti sheath when I first got it and there just was not enough room. The 4" wrench fits really nice in the Surge sheath. :)

After a month the elastic side pocket on my leather sheath teared up on the inside, probably because of the sharp corners of the saw and file handle. The teared fabric gets entangled with the Surge so the tool gets stuck in the sheath sometimes. I've stoped using a sheath all together and rely upon the pocket clip. The extra bitkit and the blades are left behind since I normaly stored them in the sheath. This makes me wonder if loose components in a tool is such a great idea.. I keep missing those I leave behind.
