Hi all this is my first post on here so hello haha...
Anyway i do a lot of hiking, camping and climbing and ive never had a good multi tool to hand when ive needed one in the past so i thought enough is enough im getting one. So ive just orded the leatherman surge, i looked at reviews on it and people say its really heavy thats not realy a problem for me as i like to feel that some thing is there when i need it. Do any of you know any other problems with it and do you think it will be good enough for the things i do?

Welcome to BF! You'll like it here. When you get a chance, check out the wilderness & survival forum. Lots of good folks there, and good info too.

As for the Surge, I love mine. It is heavy, but with the bit kit, it literally is a "pocket tool box". Not really pocketable, due to size & weight, but the sheath is very well made for general use.

I've used mine all around the house, for small repairs in every room, little improvement jobs, etc. I've taken mine both hiking and camping, and like you said, I don't mind the weight. I've cut & sharpened tent stakes, fixed equipment like gas stove regulators, sharpened hatchets & other scout's knives, and other tasks too, that a normal scout knife wouldn't have handled. (I still had one with me, though. ;))

Not really useful for tasks like carving cooking utensils, which I use a Stockman pattern for anyway. But, the Surge is more than adequate for most jobs I needed to do. In my opinion, I'd rather have more than I need (ie: a little extra weight) and not need it, than be "under-tooled". If you get the Surge, and it is too much, you can always buy or trade for a smaller tool, like the Wave.

Hey thanks chris mate. My surge has just arrived this morning had a look at it and its amazing im well happy with it. Its a little stiff at the moment but its already loosening up with me playing around with it. And like you said id rather be over tooled and not need it than need it and not have the right tool!

Thanks a lot for your feedback chris i appreciate it.

I EDC my Surge

I love it, big and strong and tackles any job I have

downside is the weight, but I gotten used to it

if not the Surge go with its little brother the Wave.

Honestly for camping I would have picked Victorinox Swisstool Spirit X. At 7.4 oz it's much lighter than the 12oz Surge while retaining similar features. With the weight difference I can carry a fixed blade. The Spirit might be slightly better suited for woodcraft because it has a chisel.

As Sep said, there are lighter options. I'm not gonna say what I carry since it's the same as above, but there are quite few choices.

On the other hand a buddy of mine is a knifemaker and he feels naked without his Surge (a painful sight to imagine, but explains what how much he loves it)

Hi Martin,
Will the one hand opening blade, length of blade and the fact that it is locking (two actually) be an issue for you legally? Just a curiousity question.
Cheers,
Doug

The Surge is a great fishing tool. Ive used it to grab big catfish by the lower jaw and to unhook carp , turtles.... The diamond file quickly sharpens hooks. I sharpened one side of the eyeglass screwdriver to use as a jighead paint remover. For EDC I carry something smaller.
