Leatherman Ti Saw vs Victorinox feel and saw

Hi Everyone
Just thinking about getting the Leatherman Charge Ti. I have a SAK now and really like the way the SAK feels in my hands. I am a minimalist while backpacking and like to carry only one multi-tool - nothing more.
I have medium size hands so I was just wondering for longer use of the blade or saw while backpacking, how comfortable is the Leatherman Ti?
Also, how is the saw on the Ti as compared to on the SAK? The SAK saw is quite effective. Is the Leatherman just as easy to saw wood with?

Thanks in advance
Peter

Hello,

First of all Merry Christmas, if you're a minimalist I would stick ith the SAK, I have a SAK Hunter myself and I prefer it against a Charge Ti with bitholders that I don't need while camping/hiking and a lot more weight then the SAK Hunter.
The saw of the Hunter is longer then that of the Charge and I find it cutting better then that of my Wave, it isn't locked like the Wave/Charge's one but I find that of lesser importance then the added bulk and weight of the Charge.

Best Scouting wishes from Holland,

I did a test on the saws on the Swisstool and the Leatherman Charge Ti and the Ti's saw cut quite a bit faster. However, the Charge doesn't have an awl, which I find very usefull when i'm camping/backpacking.

My suggestion would be Classic SAK vs. Charge Ti I would go with the Charge, if it was between the Charge Ti and one of the larger Pocket tool SAKs like the Locksmith, Workchamp, or Hercules then I am not sure sure which I would pick.

I do however really like the Charge for the one reason: everything locks. When your miles away from home you don't want to need stiches. A saw is very easy to cut yourself with if it doesent lock. Sometimes it will bind and when you go to push on it it will fold instead of saw forward. I know a few scouts with nice cuts on their index finger from that.

Personally I prefer to carry a small folding locking saw in my pack when backpacking, I have a nice one that the Boy Scouts used to make, but discontinued. That way the saw will be larger so you can cut with a lot less strokes, it will be easier to use, and safer to use. Again, I don't know how you are (I know a few people who won't carry anything more then a SAK keychain Classic for weight), but I prefer to have a good saw on me to make sawing less time consuming and safer.

Minimalist? I would probably go with the Charge TI (even though I find the Swisstool to be better).

+ Charge is lighter and smaller.
+ Charge 154CM blade is better.
+ Adding the bit kit increases the tool's utility immensely at very little heft penalty. You could just select the bits that fit with gear you have that may need work and you would be in fine shape. You could also probably take a bit that you wouldn't normally use and grind it into an awl shape. Not ideal, but would work.

I do not know about any of you, but I do not really ever need the pliers or screwdrivers on my multi-tool. It's a cheapmans leatherman but that doesn't matter, I just never need any of those tools. I carry a Victorinox Locksmith and am quite pleased with it. I really only need a good knife, good saw, good file, and good awl. Everything else is just for show. The saw works excellent and after reading Shpshooter's comments about the locking saw, I guess he has a point cause I have cut myself with it, but I now know how to be more careful with it.
