I have had the leatherman supertool for at least 7 years now. it has been carried everywhere.

I recently bought a SAK trailmaster, I haven't done as much with it I've used it a little bit. in conjunction with the sak supertinker.

I have found thus far that the leatherman has way more usage for me.

the saw is slightly smaller on the Leatherman, the blade is a 1/2" shorter. all in all the leatherman out does the large sak.

plus I can carry the leatherman and a smaller sak that has scissors and that toothpick.

If I can have only one tool in the wilderness it would be a leatherman supertool or wave!

btw the trailmaster is for trade in the trades section of the forums.

I vastly prefer the SAK. The blade steel is better, the grinds are of a higher performance nature, the ergonomics are better. For cutting the SAK is the winner. The saw blade on the SAK is superior to the LM, it is lighter and easier to carry.
For tightening bolts or picking a hot can out of the fire, the LM is better.

Just to add: The Victorinox Swisstool blows away Leatherman products.
Victorinox Rules!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

But I do own and carry a Supertool, Wave and Pulse as well.

Victorinox Rules!!!!!!!!!!!

leatherman and sak rucksack is not to comparable. the leathermans are tools, the sak rucksack / trailmaster are folding knives.

but leatherman vs. swisstool
SWISSTOOL

yes, victorinox rules !!!

I'm all for the SAK. The only thing one lacks with the trailmaster over the Leatherman is the pliers. I can carry a small set of needle nose pliers and have the best of both worlds: a better saw, a better blade, toothpick, tweezers, etc...and it's all lighter than the leatherman..... or get the SAK Atlas and have your pliers too...

I vote for "no option" :)

For camping I carry both, although if pressed I would choose Leatherman Wave for its superior pliers, diamond files, non-glossy screwdrivers. (For everyday use, not necesary for camping). But SAK has much better knife blade, saw, and useful awl.

I have a brand new Leatherman Wave with factory leather sheath and an OST concealex sheath. They've never been used or even out of 6' distance of my pistol safe. I don't like them, period.

SAKs are what I've grown up with and they accompany me everywhere. If I need pliers, I go to the toolbox and grab a pair of Craftsman. The SAKs handle most of my other chores.

BTW ... Chad, if you're trying to lift a pot with a bail out of the fire, open your SAK canopener and use a reverse grip to hook the bail and lift the pot. ;)

I'd take a locking SAK over the Wave any day. I like my Wave, but my SAK Tradesman is far superior for everything other than maybe the pliers and file.

1. The locking SAKs have an enormously superior grip in terms of comfort and security, which is a big deal for a tool that gets so much use in the outdoors.

2. The blade on the Wave doesn’t even begin to compare to the blade on a SAK. Victorinox designed a folding knife with other useful tools. Leatherman designed a multitool with the blade thrown in as an apparent afterthought. The Wave is a good tool with an almost useless blade. Don’t even get me started on the serrated blade of the Leatherman.

3. I also prefer the saw on the SAK. What can I say? It cuts better.

4. I find good slipjoints to be much preferable over the “lock” on the Wave. Nothing ticks me off more than using a tool on the Wave, and having the tool start to fold up to the point where it sits at an angle against the guard. The SAK slipjoints are very strong and secure, and help to keep the tools in the open position.

5. I can open up a SAK tool without having 142 other tools open up at the same time. Opening up a tool inside of the Wave always seem to require the subsequent closing of all the other tools on that side of the multitool. I absolutely dread the thought of having to open one of the tools on the inside of my Wave.

6. I definitely find the SAK to be more rust resistant than the Wave. I can look at the Wave and make the tools rust. I’ve NEVER had a SAK rust up on me. Very impressive!!!

7. My SAK Tradesman has an awl, where my Wave has scissors. I use an awl much more often in the outdoors than scissors. I can use the SAK blade as a substitute for scissors, but let’s see you restitch torn fabric or leather with a Wave.

8. When I’m in the outdoors, I need 37 different sized flathead screwdrivers like I need a hole in my head. The SAK builds a couple of flatheads into eminently more useful tools.

9. I’ve never needed to adjust a tool on my SAK. I can’t find a tool to loosen up the screws on my Wave anywhere, and it’s too stiff.

Don’t get me wrong. The Wave is a useful tool. It just doesn’t hold a candle to the SAK in terms of both utility and craftsmanship. The more you look at a SAK, the more you see the genius of its design. The more I look at my Wave, the worse my headache gets.

I got the order after me  :D

I am not saying all saks are worthless, I am saying the leatherman supertool is more useful to me the my SAK trailmaster.

btw the way if anyone is unhappy with the LM I will trade them.

just today, I have some loose screening on my door pulled out my LM pliers and pulled it taut and stapled it shut. I also smashed 2 fleas. :barf:

I just always seem to be using the LM. Yes I do think the SAK blade is better and also the steel. as far as the saw goes it isn't like a SAK can cut down full grown trees and the LM can only do a few thin branches.
The way I see it if I need a good blade then my Spydie endura will work better than the LG SAK blade.

This is my point exactly. I just don't have room for an entire arsenal when I'm in the outdoors. Every item is weight and another piece of equipment to keep track of. So I carry a small folder and a larger fixed blade. My SAK is my folder, not a supplement to it.

The Wave may be a perfectly serviceable urban tool, but it just doesn't cut it in the outdoors for me.

BINGO !!!!

Buzz, You hit the nail right on the head with that one. The key word in that statement is "may." I guess it all depends on what works well for the individual. Leathermans DO NOT work well for me. SAKs do, why? BECAUSE SAKS RULE !!!!!!!!!!!!!

The Grand ToolMaster has spoken,

sgt mike and buzzbait,

do you guys only carry one knife into the woods?

I can hardly beleive that:rolleyes:

I can 3 knives urban or outdoors, the same 3 for either, spydie endura, sak supertinker, leatherman supertool. I feel this is the perfect combo.

summertime fun:D

multi-tool vs. SAK

One has pliers, wire cutters, and good screwdrivers.

The other one has scissors, a corkscrew, tweezers and a toothpick.

One is obviously made for hard work, American-style.

The other is made to be handy, European-style.

. . . I take my Victorinox Outrider hiking. I like the longer better blade more than the Wave's and use a blade more (and the Wave's other tools less) outdoors. The Outrider also weighs almost 1/4 lb. less than the Wave.

My favourite is the Leatherman Supertool (older version). Every blade locks. It's blocky when gripped, but it's still the tool I find best for heavy use. I received a huge SAK (don't know the model) as a gift, but ended up trading it with my father's Leatherman Original. He liked the SAK more, as it had more options ("handy", as Komondor said). I liked the ruggedness and smaller size of the Leatherman. The smaller Leatherman was instantly added to my "serious outdoors toolset" alongside the Supertool. I actually used both Leathermans simultaneously more than a few times, always another one as pliers.

The blades aren't good, true, but I only need them to do light work, and that they accomplish.

I wouldn't compare the Wave to anything outdoors as I feel it's geared for urban conditions. Compare the Supertool instead.

Whereas.. urban use? Nothing beats Micra. :D

Again, in the woods I carry both but I could "survive" easy with either one alone. I guess it depends on how important the pliers are. Yes, steel in SAKS are better but not nearly the improvement in quality from SAK to Spyderco, for example. Delica or Calypso Jr at ~2 ounces is not much "extra weight".
Both are very handy, SAK And Leatherman, neither inspires "religious devotion' on my part, however-

Chris,

I never said I only carry one knife. On the contrary, I carry several ... a SAK for chores, a small fixed blade for heavy work, and an Opinel for food prep. Nice and light, easy to maintain tools that perform their intended tasks very well.

I still don't like multitools and don't carry them.

So there:p
