Hi. Seeking advice.

I have had a black oxide wave for a couple of years and noticed in use it doesn't cut wire cleanly.

On inspection, I can see through the pliers at the hard wire cutter at the base of the inside of the jaws. There a small but obvious gap when the pliers are closed.

Is this how it should be? I suspect not.

Any advice would be welcome, thank you.

New Wave or Original Wave? I just checked a couple of new ones and the jaws overlap at the hardwire cutter, but just barely. Light still shows through if you are looking at an angle, but not if you are square with the tool.

Hi Yablanowitz.
I appreciate the response. It is visible square on. A noticeable gap. I use the wave quiet a lot and for cutting cable and wire. It always leaves one on two unsnipped in this void.

I shall contact leatherman here in the UK and get it replaced, I think.

If you do a lot of wire or cable cutting, it might be a good idea to look into one of the tools with replaceable cutters. I modded a New Wave with the pliers head from a Rebar to get replaceable cutters and outside accessable blades without going up to the bulk of the Surge.

Are you confusing the hard wire cutters from the regular wire cutters on the wave?

The wire cutters on the wave have a hard wire cutter portion nearest the pivot - that's where the jaws make a small groove and small gap. The gap is there so that it can cut/snap hard wire. Where the gap isn't is the regular wire cutting portion.

Most of the time I'm cutting either solid or stranded electrical copper wires so I use the regular wire cutter portion. It is a little annoying if my stranded wire gets into the hard wire portion, that never cuts cleanly. I guess if I needed to cut something like nails, piano wire or fencing wire I would use the hard wire cutters.

Here's someone's video of using the hard wire cutters:

I could be. By hard wire cutters I assume thicker blades and the ability to apply more force close to the pivot. My Swiss tool doesn't have a gap at the same point nor do any of my tool box pliers.
I shall watch the video and thank you for your reply.
