okay, so i have a leatherman wave and i love it, but i was wondering how much abuse it can take. i see people on tv that take them into saltwater, jungles, all the places i try really hard not to take a MT. so whats the deal with that? do they just figure on taking care of them and removing rust when they get home? if so how would you do that if the rust got in the pivots? wouldn't you have to completely take it apart? thanks

I'm assuming that those who do so with their Leathermans also do maintain their MTs, possibly even lubricating them before and after. Here's the Leatherman Maintenance page.

They are stainless and can take a lot of abuse. I know someone who bought the original leatherman when it came out and has carried it everyday since. If youre worried about rust, oil it really well and keep it in a waterproof container or at least a water resistant sheath.

The best solution to rust is not getting it in the first place.

Much has been made on this site of rust-prone Leathermen, which I find puzzling  .

Since my first Leatherman PST in 1996, I have owned and used a fair number of Leatherman products: Surge, Super Tool, ST 200, Core, ST 300, Charge TTi, Juice CS4, Juice S2, Squirt S4, PS4, Micra, Style CS, and still have most of them. They have been in many different conditions, exposed to wet environments, sweated on, with minimal maintenance except that I always clean them when they get all gormy with sap, dirt or other forms of mung. My son carries a PST II which I guarantee has gone through major abuse because that's what he does to all his tools. None of these has ever shown any more rust than a few specks in the plier jaw grooves on a couple.

Make of this what you will.

they can take quite a bit of abuse i use mine all the time however i used it for cleaning catfish at my camp and when i got to my friends house i noticed a little rust on the blade but no big deal just a second of work and its taken care of idk how they would do in a jungle for any amount of time without a ready means of cleaning
