Are the pliers supposed to have a spring action???

If you are referring to an action that opens the pliers when you release your grip, then no they aren't.

If you are referring to the spongy feel when you grip the pliers closed real hard, that is normal.

No, the pliers do not have a spring action. The Wave is probably one of the best multitools, if not the best, on the market. Leatherman's quality is fabulous.
