I have a Wave and love it but people here seem to favor the Supertool...why? I never handled one but will buy one if y'all sell me on it :D

the wave is cool but I have a couple of niggles with mine

1) the outside blades are very stiff theres no way of opening them one handed (maybe the screw needs loosening a little but i dont have a driver to fit the strange hole, tried working some oil into the joint and it didnt do anything)

2) when its all closed up the ends of the handles are about 1mm above/below each other so if i laid it flat on a table one is touching the table ok but the other is about 1mm in the air.

its been like this since i got it, a few minor points but some i feel shouldnt be there in the top of the range tool, especially as my micra was perfect until it became all gummed up with pocket fluff and thats the cheapest tool they make

The main factor for me is all the tools lock in the ST and ST200. (The ST200 has rounded handles. This is a big improvemet over the original ST). Non locking tools can lead to only one thing, knuckle busting  .

Supertool vs the wave? An easy one ,mate. The wave is for light
duty only while the supertool is for .....well , EVERTHING:D

If you can't get it done with a supertool.......go get the tool box:eek:

I agree with TightWad 100%!!! The SuperTool is my favorite Leatherman. :D The feature that I like the most on the ST is that you're able to lock all the tool blades, besides the fact that this multitool is one tough workhorse.

I had a Wave, but it was a little too light for me so I traded it off. Besides of it being more of a medium duty tool, the lack of locking tool blades was another reason that I wasn't happy with it. Between the two, I would go with the SuperTool. ;)

I don't 'yet' have a Supertool but what from I've seen and learnt....I agree the Wave is a light to medium use tool. Rather more suited to personal urban use carry than a professional workhorse. The design is excellent but it does have some faults e.g. not all tools lock, handle sloppiness etc. The Supertool(s) are of a much stronger build and therefore can take more punishment but they are obviously heavier and not as easy on the pocket as the Wave.

In the end, it comes down to the application you will be using the tool for. If you require a general use, medium weight multitool with ample features, not requiring all locking blades I would say go for the Wave - you won't be disappointed. If you on the other hand require a stronger, heavier weight, more professional day to day tool, then go for the Supertool, but be prepared to hunk it around :)

"You pays your money, you takes your choice"

Hope this helps.

I've checked out all of the tools over the years, but the only one I've ever carried is the Victorinox X-Tool that I picked up a couple of months ago. Its heavy but with the locking blades/tools I've got no doubt in my mind that it will handle anything that I need it to.

FWIW, I'd go with the Supertool.

You also might consider the SOG PowerLock.

It is just as heavy duty (If not more) as the Supertool, and has the added advantage of compound leverage on the pliers. All of the tools lock, and it has a 1/4" drive adapter built in.

I have been carrying the PowerLock for just over a year now, and it is the heaviest duty multi tool I have owned. (I have had Leatherman's, & Gerbers prior to the SOG)
I use this tool to it's limit amost every single day, and it keeps on working like new.

When the time comes, (If ever) I will replace it with another PowerLock.

See the PowerLock HERE
