This one is leaving as a gift tomorrow now that I am done tweaking it a bit...the brass chape was darken, the brass on both ends of the handle was darkened (looked like the chape) which I did not care for the look so I polished as it looks now and the blade was blued...cya!

Looks good. It is an AK, but is it a 12 or 15"?
Is it going overseas?

Nothing like a simple AK. Looks like it's ready to get the job done!

I like to put a little liquid Kiwi black shoe polish on the edges of the leather frog. Makes it look more finished. But not everybody likes that look.

Good on ya for giving one away!

Steve

Dang thats a beautiful AK. The handle is just beautiful, and the blade looks to be perfectly done. I like how the hibaki looks with it too. Who was the kami?

Nice, pointy AK- very pretty in blue.

Tell the lucky new owner about this place.

That's a good idea. Tell them most of us are nuts, but that we're good nuts

Well, yeah. The guy is gonna need another one, or twelve. :p Or 30.

Sweet: how did you "antique" the chappe?

Mike

Good call Sweet...gotta get those *ugly* ones out.

Get busy culling the rest of the herd...you have my address, don't you?

;):)

Out of curiousity how do you 'blue' a blade? at first I really liked the mirror finish but I think I'm changing my mind on the subject.

There are several ways to blue a blade, Gord. Probably the easiest is to "cold blue" it with bluing compound found in most gun shops (even department stores that sell firearms like walmart). I've had pretty good success with tru-blu by the makers of tru-oil. The trick is to get the blade CLEAN. Once it's clean...clean it again. Hot soapy water, dry, then while it down with a cotton ball of rubbing alcohol until no more dirt comes off. Then just follow the directions on the bottle. leave the bluing agent on longer or shorter or do two coats to get the right level of blue for you.
Try a search. This is the place where i learned all about bluing:)

Hey M. Taylor, how long does it take to get a package in Afghanistan?

Hi Arty this one is 12" yep overseas it's going

Hey Steve, ya I thought about the Kiwi but don't want it messing up the goods when it gets hot...will be using black ink

Hi Andy, I had a logbook someplace around here that I kept track of what blade I bought, when and who made it...cant find it so her is a semi-closeup of the markings, somebody will know who made it faster than I can locate that book!

Hey Mike, I don't know if the soon to be owner knows about this place or not, if he does then he knows what he is getting:D and we'll find out if he makes a post...if not, then he'll find about it with a note with the AK

Hey Munk...at 12,130 posts by you and still not posting photos...nuts! That we all here are:D

Hey Mike, no antiquing of the chape, I used Brichwood Casey "Brass Black" though it probably would have looked better antiqued...

Hey Nasty, I think this will be #8 that has been given away..1 to little Bro, 2 to the guys at Pantera Custom Motorcycles, 1 to Bro in Iraq, 3 in monetary donations to Uncle for Iraq and now this one to Afghanistan...I think there is another 1 or 2 I am forgetting...Culling King!

Hey Gord, for this blade I used Formula 44/40 instant gun blue for steel.

Thanks Jake!

Who is this?

Hi Sweet.
Didn't know that the Kiwi would rub off. Thanks for the tip!

RR is Raju Rasaili. Uncle Bill used to call him Amtrak.

How do you like the 44/40? I tried Perma Blue from Birchwood Casey and couldn't get a smooth look. Got some Oxpho-Blue from Brownells and like it a lot. It's more black than blue though. Whichever I use, I like to dip some very fine steel wool in the solution and rub it lightly on the blade. Seems to make it "take" better.

Giving a good blade like this to a soldier is a super thing to do. Thanks!

Steve

Afghanistan, eh? Well if it's going there, then it's going to a good place and (no doubt) to someone who deserves it.:)

I will, respectfully, put myself in line for the next one though. :D

lol to the salinas location bit....

salinas has its good points, theres a very good guitar repairman at wise music.... i do however tend to avoid it on my way home (to monterey) when im coming from the north... the 129, 183, and 152 and 156 highways are just way to goergious and wonderful to ever go the 101/salinas route to monterey.

i tried to do a vinegar patina on my old 20" siru a long while ago... didnt come out half as nice as that :)

gotta go back and try it on my old faithful workhorse 18" ang khola....

GREAT job!

I'm going to be sending one of mine off to an "adopted" Marine of mine in Northern Iraq. He is an MP but is kicking in the doors of suspected terrorist and interogating them first. Trying to decide what Khuk to send him and why. Right now I have some requested gear on order so I have a little time to decide. Any advice is greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

Billy

"Interogating"?

The most fearsome one you have...convince the bastards to talk.

Billy,

Do an advanced search for Sylverfalcn's username. He wrote about using khuks while stationed in Afghanistan. A BAS and a WWII. IIRC. Its a good read with comments from Rusty and UB in there too.
