Leaving Your Machines Out In The Cold?

Hello to all!

It is almost Winter and up here in Wisconsin it get real cold, some time below zero for days on in. I will be buying machines that I was thinking about installing in my garage(because some are too heavy or too big to take indoor).

My biggest questions that I seem to have a real hard time getting a clear answer on are; one, is it OK to leave the machines out in the cold in unheated garage? Second, is it OK to operate them in that condition? I was told by some that casted metal parts some time would crack due to the cold and bearing and parts that are lubricated with oil would freeze and you would damage them if you use them while it is frozen. Is this true?

Any inputs would be much appreciated!

Thank you very much for reading this post.

Hi Shay, long time no see! :) I've got my bandsaw under plastic on the back balcony...not exactly Wisconsin winter I know but it seems OK :)

Hi Shay
As you can see in my address line, I live in Butte, MT. My forging shop is unheated except when the forge is running. I have my press, chop saw, side grinder, and forge out there all winter and everything works fine. *fingers crossed for continued good luck* The only thing that really seems to be affected by the cold is me!
