LED article at Technology Review

Ok, so in the article they say a standard incandescent is about 10% efficient, and LED's are about the same. So now take a Photon and a similar key sized incandescent light. The Photon will be 4 times brighter and run about 10 times longer on the same batteries. What is up with that?

The monochromatic LEDs are much more efficient, the article mentioned that the LED assemblies used for red traffic lights use 1/10 the power, but white LEDs aren't. I like the red and yellow LEDs as the typical 3V batteries have a long life, compared to the 4.5V to 6V that are usually used with white LEDs that don't last nearly as long.
