I was hoping to get an opinion on which color LED to get? I'm planning on getting a smaller one as a back up, but really don't know which of the many colors is most suitable for an outdoor/survival setting.

Thanks very much,

Vince

If it's as backup to a larger white light, then white LEDs makes a lot of sense to me. They're often small and powerful.

That said, what I'm using is a UKE 2AAA with the red LED, because it's not very powerful so it doesn't do much to night vision, but still lights up the ground well enough when you're walking.

Hi,

I would opt for a Photon II either red green or white.
Personally I carry a Photon II Super green that was one of a couple of Photons that a dear friend, our Doctor, send to me for our scouting group.
I kept the green one that he had stuffed with 2 3v lithium cells (CR2016 's) and this baby throws out more light then you then you would expect.

As a backup you could almost put ity in your wallet so small is it or hang it from your ear if you have one pierced

I have the UKE 2AAA and it's incredible also with the normal white beam (better then my maglite 2AA) but the red LED they sell as an exchange part sucks in my opinion, it's a very low powered red LED. OKE it'll probably burn for hundreths off hours but I don't like breaking my legs in the dark.

Photon's forever is my motto

This will probably void your warranty, but you can go to a local electronics supply house, use radio shack as a LAST resort, and buy various LEDs.
If you are putting them in a Photon all you have to do is trim the leads and bend one of them to match the bend in one of the leads. Be careful not to confuse the anode(+) and the cathode(-), LEDs will not work if you do. The package should have a diagram telling you which is which.
