hey - i just got some 250 lumen led flashlights - i guess cheap ones - 3 for $20 - now i am wondering about other ones - how many lumens do they go up to? - can i get one that is much more powerful for a decent price? - what are common lumen amounts that they come in? - what brands are good for the money?- can i get one for $20-$30 that is a lot more powerful than these 250 lumen ones? - i am very new to this led light thing , but these ones i got look pretty bright and sturdy for the price , so it got me thinking about maybe getting a better more powerful one - the ones i got are called techlite lumen master, but they also say cree on them - i don't know what name is the brand or what - i think cree is the led bulb itself from what i gather from the internet , but i'm not sure- can anyone help me out? - thanks - marc

For more than you ever want to know about flashlights and their outputs, go here:http://www.candlepowerforums.com/vb/forum.php

There are several different ways of measuring Lumen output, and some vastly inflate the actual output.
The most conservative way to rate output is Out The Front (OTF) Lumens
As for good inexpensive EDC flashlights, I highly recommend either 4Sevens or Fenix.
I carry a 4Sevens all the time; this one:

Mine is called the Mini 123; I guess they changed the name.
It's tiny but still puts out like 210 Lumens (OTF).
It's incredibly bright.
Good luck hunting.

+ 1 for Fenix. Ive owned a couple over the years. They offer a range of outputs and they last a long while on batteries. I edc the PD32. Really useful and priced fairly.

thanks for the info - yeah , i also would like one that runs on regular easy to find batteries , but i guess the higher the lumen count the faster the batteries go - the ones i bought say they only run 1 hour at full power , but i will look into the website and those brands , models - thanks - marc

I usually carry a zebra light sc52, puts out ~500 lumens on a 14500 but can also take AA's if needed.

The tiny size and zebralIght's unique user interface coupled with the high output and ability to run on widely available batteries make it a great edc light!

4 Sevens has given me a lot of "bang for the buck".

More than lumens, you need to pay attention to the head. Is it smooth and shiny or orange peel? Is it wide and shallow or wide and deep?

Given the same LUMENS I can have very little throw and huge throw with the same flashlight body/electronics using different heads. Take a look at a 4 Sevens Turbo head flashlight.

yeah , i see that a lot of them have ways of changing the beam - the ones i got have no way to adjust it - i guess i also need to look into that - there are just so many out there , and i know almost nothing about them - not like knives, where i have had an interest in them most of my life , so i know quite a bit more - but thanks for the info - i probably know someone who uses and knows all about these things but just don't know they do , kind of how i don't talk to people about knives unless i know they are into them also.

Many, many good lights out there now. Knowing your emitter (led type) is as important as anything. I really like the cree XM-L and new XM-L2.

Just within the last few weeks Four Sevens has released four new 'burst' mode models. I have the new 2 cr123a burst model, among others. It throws a ton of light. Seriously, super bright on burst and insane run times on the lesser power options you get by twisting the head. You would buy about three of the $20-$30 lights to get the 2 123 model, but it's easily 20x the light. You could not go wrong if you started with a Fenix or Four Sevens to get your feet wet.

Caution: Careful, they're addictive!!! :)

I carry a Suprabeam Q7xr at work every day.
It is also real nice to carry when walking the dog late at night out in the forest.
At max power it puts out over 800 lumen, but I tend to use it at half power.

I carry an Eagletac D25C. It can go over 700 lumens with a RCR123/16430. Great light for the money IMO.
