Have you guys seen the new ELEKTORLUMENS flashlights?
They use a single LED, a Luxeon Star in either 1watt or 3watt power.
My Blaster Jr , 1 watt is about as bright as a 2 D cell halogen light, but about the size of a 1 D cell light ,(6").
The bulb will never break or burn out & I get about 8 HOURS of full bright white light. It runs on 3 AA rechargeable batteries !
They have a new model which I've pre-ordered & it uses the 3 watt Luxeon Star & runs on 3 C cells. You get about 12 hrs full bright burn & way brighter light . Each of these lights sells for $50.
I have a Brunton solar charger for AA batteries. It works fine & was a good value at $20. My GPS eats batteries quickly & this gives me 4 fresh ones every 12 hrs of sunshine. The Blaster Jr likes 'em too. A DC adapter for the C cell charger keeps the 3 watt light good to go when camping.
There are many good comments & reviews about these at

Just search or check the Elektrolumens forum. Those guys know their lights & most of 'em own 1 or more. That's when I decided to buy one. Use NiMH batteries for best results.
