Has any one had any experience using Led Head Lamps? I own a Petzl Tikka and would like to replace it with a WATER PROOF model. Any Suggestions.

PrincetonTec has several LED models that have earned the designation "waterproof." I have an older model "Impact" model that is activated by rotating the head and has O-rings.

Prices vary dramatically by vendor.

XMAN, I've always been interested in led head lights and your model in particular. What is the overall quality and would you recommend it for walking to a deer stand in the dark? Can you buy a red filter for it?
Thanks!

Don't anybody laugh, please. On REALLY short notice a couple of years ago I pciked up an Evertready LED headlamp for maybe $12 at Wal-Mart. Damn think won't die, has been dunked about 9 times, and puts out pretty good light. I've got a Princeton Tec Yukon that is a great light, but it I never seem to have it with me. (It was my first and only time in a Wal-Mart [Brady, Texas]).

i believe it. Sometimes, the best deals are found in the least-likely places.
I've had a Black Diamond Moonlight? model; it was good for night trekking, if the batteries were fresh. However, it only had one brightness setting. After a little while, though, the cord shorted out. I have heard that was a design flaw with the first batch of that model, which has since been corrected.

Next, I got a Princeton Tec Aurora. It was great at first, but it sure seemed to dim down after a bit of use. Is it just me, or do LEDs lose their initial brightness after a few months' use, even if the batteries are fresh? But, to continue the commentary, the Aurora had 3 brightness settings, 2 flashing settings, an adjustable head, was waterproof, and held the batteries in the lamp box. It was a nice package, other than my concern over loss of brightness. Sadly, I loaned it to my step-dad when he was doing some housework, and I've never seen it since (nor has he, for that matter!) Oh well, guess I'll just have to get some money and go try out a new model! :D

Hey Berettaman

You gan get a Petzl Tikka with a Removal red Filter. Its called a Tactikka i think, you can try Tadgear.com i get most of my gear from them, good people to deal with.
Petzl Tikka i good value for money, Its not water proof though the newer model is slightly water resistant

I bought an inova 24/7 awhile back with the head lamp kit thing. It does not seem as secure as a dedicated head lamp but it works very well for me given the amount I use it as a head lamp.

I use it primarily as a lantern. It's distress signal is also annoying as all hell, I'm sure it'd get the attention of any SAR guys flying low if the need arises.

any suggestions on a LED light at least as bright as a 3D Maglite?

Not Surefire... I have 2 already, i can't Sacrafice another $150 on a flashlight.

HERE is a bar graph showing the "throw" of a large number of flashlights, both LED and incandescent. As you can see, there are no LED lights above the Maglite 3D with the exception of the Elektrolumens Tri Star with three Luxeon III LEDs. Not cheap.

The prinction tec arura and scout are good ultra lights LEDs that are water restienent. My arura was droped in the senca creek in WV and it worked just fine. it operates on 3 AAA batteries and is pretty light. The battery hours last pretty long too, and for a 3 LED headlamp it throws a good beam.

Petzl has now come out with the Myo XP. An LED hed lamp that appernety has a good beam, plus a boost mode for more light. check out their website @ www.petzl.com

Also my Myo 3 is water proof to a point. It is a 3 LED + a Xenon bulb. The Xenon bulb throughs a beam out to 100 meters (so said to package). Last campout in the Senca Creek Backcountry in WV my Myo 3 got wet from constant rain and preformed quite well.

Inova XO3 Fits everything I need in a throw light to spot those "what in the hell was that" :D

My Inova XO3 is firmly in my hand and turned on anytime I'm out after nightfall, such as walking across the Temple Ambler campus or walking the dog. It throws a white beam of light very nicely and quite a distance.

I would like to get a LED headlamp and at the moment the one that seems to fit the most requirements is the Princeton Tec EOS.

I also want to get one of the new brighter Photon Micro Lights.

When I find a good source/price that has both, I'll probably be tempted.

I saw a place that had the EOS for about $33 or $34, that had a few things I wanted, including batteries, but since I also saw the EOS for about $28 I waited.

Although I haven't tried it, the Petzl Zipka/Tikka are suppose to be submergable. Although the case isn't wasterproof, the unit functions while submerged, and after being submerged (according to Petzl). I read a review online where a guy tryed it, and reported that it worked as advertized. Still not as good as a true waterproof unit, but otherwise, it is the best allround LED headpamp I have found for my purposes.
