LED shop lights

LEDs are great for spotlights, they suck at whole room lighting. However, I do have an LED desk lamp spotlight on top of my drill press and grinder. I definitely recommend LED spotlights in the shop.

I tried relighting a room at work. . .It took 7 watts of LEDs to give the same light as the 10w CF that was there. Add to that the cost of the LEDS and the overhead of the transformer and I figure it will only take about 8 years to pay for it. Of course, by then it will break and I'll have to replace them.

I use several magnetic base LED lights ( like the one shown) in the shop for spot lighting saws, drill press, mill, etc.
The most important use I have from them is when doing togi ( sharpening) on Japanese blades. The togi dai ( sharpening bench) has a bright led unit on it to illuminate the blade surface well. It is amazing how much you see when there is enough light.....and how much you miss when there isn't.

I highly recommend LED units.

I ordered the one with magnetic base without the magnifying glass and the little clip on. I have a couple little LED flashlights that really throw the light and are really easy on the batteries. Hope these are as good.

Thanks for the input Larry

In all my years of experiencing various lighting systems it long ago taught me the importance of full spectrum lighting !! Now you can get three types of typical LED lights but the warmer [yellowish] is better. But if you go to flourescent you can get full spectrum .That is much better to see details such as sewing, working with circuit boards ,etc. And it's much easier on the eyes. Google 'Ott Lights'

For sharpening Japanese items, the LEDs are properly called "looki see."
