Has anybody tried Lee Reeves double bit ( nessmuk ) hatchet . If so how did it preform ????

I have one. So nice that I haven't brought myself to use it yet. **Kinda stupid isn't it?**

FWIW: I've read very favorable past posts and reviews about them.

NAAA its not so stupid I have purchased several knives and a hatchet that were to pretty to use...got over it and realize what I had been missing

Damn !! How about that, Shwert should be getting commision for his articles.
His articles put me onto Gene's knives as well as checking into Lee Reeves.

I've got one, have used it extensively and like it! I've mainly used it for backpacking, I had him make mine 12" OAL and it is like 1 lb and 2 oz.

The two things I use it for a lot is to chop wood for my Sierra Zip Backpacking stove, and to chop wood for campfires.

The thicker edge is great for laying wood on the ground and splitting it. My only criticisim of it is the handle is a bit thicker than the bit, so if you are cutting a log that is thicker than the bit, which is 3" if you do not cut from both sides you kind of scuff up the sides of the handle near the head.

Here's a few reports I did on it and other hatchets:

Hope this helps. Trust me. They are worth the $$ and the wait.

Hollowdweller, do you find it uncomfortable choking up on the handle to do fine work ?

No, not a bit.

In fact very seldom do I grasp it at the rear and chop full swing. I usually grasp about 1/2 to 1/3 of the way up and rely on the sharpness and precision of the cut instead of wailing away.

How wide are the bits on your axe? I wouldn't mind buyin' a Nessmuk trio and storing it away for my son (who doesn't exist yet, mind you ;)) once he's old enough.

Tarmix,

Nessmuk and his Tools was excellent I thought, but that was Schwert I think who wrote that one, but thanks anyway;)

FSCJedi,

From memory I think the bits on the Reeves are 3" good size. The other one, from Ragnar is like 2 something.

Just placed an order for one of the regular length (15") osage orange hafted ones. I know it'll be a while, but I already can't wait! I may not be able to just "store it away" for my boy. Haha. You know, I gotta field test it to make sure it works okk... :D

Thought I'd bump this to the top since there had been some interest concerning this type of axe.

Oh I was thinking if you were in my general area you could check my hatchet out but Fairmont's pretty far. I used to go to college up that way in Glenville.

Hollowdweller, did you get your Nessmuk knife from Dale Chudzinski? The reason I ask is because I like how your wood scales are held on instead of the normal 4-pin setup that he shows with his examples. I want to get one to go with my double-bit.
