I have a GK panawal khukuri that I stash in the SUV. I treated it with Lee Valley wax about 1 1/2 years ago. I just took it out of the tool box to check it - not a speck of rust.

The wax is fine stuff, and much less expensive than the brand name wax. I treated a pinuti blade with it, and have had the blade in the leather sheath that it came with. This is normally a sure bet for rust, but none in sight.

I highly recommend the wax.

7.95 / 4.4 = $1.80/oz (I get the price as 7.95 on the website.)

20.95/7 = $2.99/oz

I've had a can of Ren Wax for several years and have hardly put a dent in it. 4.4 oz of a similar product should be a lifetime supply for most people.

In about 2 lifetimes, when I've finished off my supply of Ren wax, I'll be ready to give it a try.

Ahhh quick question...Is that stuff bad for ya?? I am thinking of putting something like that on my nessy when it is finished to keep it from rusting in the field...

Plus it would come in handy to protect a blades finish when I have to hard form a sheath around it...yea I dont trust plastic wrap anymore!!

Thanks

Wouldn't fiddle with wax coating a field knife that's going to see much use. The rule of thumb for carbon steel constant use field knives is "clean, dry, and lightly oiled". The wax route would be more applicable to occasional use or collector knives that need protection while stored.

Sarge,
I see what ya mean...

BUT

I tend to use my blades in rotation...But my nessy will more or less be the constant companion...So what I was thinking is, get some of this stuff and put it on and buff it out and then leave it...Would that be a bad thing?? I dont intend on reapplying it more than 2 times a year...

How's that? or am I being dense again?

That's fine, but if it's going to see use the wax will be abraded off. You can either oil it, or not oil it (like I usually do[n't]). If you don't oil it you can expect some oxidation. I don't mind that on a user.

The wax is a good treatment for leather sheaths too. In that case it is good for users.

Sarge and then Howard hit it right. Bill used to say a collector item would be cleaned and waxed and put away; a user washed with soap and water and lightly oiled. Bill used DW40. I use gun oil mostly.

No expert here, but I would say if you were going to take a waxed blade back to the field you'd have to get the wax off before sharpening again.

Ok guy's I see what ya mean...was a nice thought

Prolly just put the wax on it and carry one of those tuffcloths with me when I go out to do battle with the local Cottenmouths...

<sigh>

The Lee Valley wax works great on the blades, but I have never tried it on leather.
While there is no reason that it shouldn't be fine for that purpose - the stuff is so expensive that I like to keep it for the blades, bolsters, etc.
