Recommendation? Leeb Hardness Tester (Rebound) - eBay...

THey are not really what we need. The range they work best in is below knife hardness. You really want a tester with an indenter.

While they say it tests up to RC70, my car speedometer also goes up to 160.

10-4, I saw 20-70 HRC and said "hot damn" in my head. lol

Good to know it won't cut it... I know very little about HRC testers...

Ames handheld has lower repeatability and reproducibility.

Just get a Grizzly hardness tester, a Wilson Block in the 60rc range and a copy of ASTM E18-19

Just doing some reading... It sounds like the Enco bench mount, the Ames hand held, and the Willson bench mount are the gold standards. This sound about right?

There are many used for sale on ebay listed as "parts only"... It seems to be a daunting task to repair one though.

The rebound testers don’t work good on thin items. I took mine to work so I could hardness test shafts and sprockets.

I have a buddy who works at a machine shop with a rebound tester. I had him test some knives and the results were all over the map and unusable.

I found an Ames on the cheap but you'd be better off with a bench top as others have noted. Not that I have any complaints about my Ames

I was hesitating for a while between an Ames clone by TX Instruments, and the "Grizzly". Went with the Grizzly in the end, found a good deal on it. Haven't gotten any further than almost unpacking as you can see.

But one obvious advantage with the Grizzly is the extremely well made, fashionable and exclusive "dust cover" it comes with:

It sure does look slick! Excited to see your results on it!

Yes, and the Chinese garbage bag, I mean dust cover, is the icing on the cake!

Kidding aside, I'm excited to try it soon. I'll report back.
