Leek Composite blade or S30V G10?

I went to Wally world last night and picked up my first Kershaw, the dlt coated blade and handle Leek. What a great knife! However......While showing it off to a buddy today, he let me know that he works for a EMS/Police/Fire dealer and has access to a wider variety of Leeks. So......I'm going to take back the black on black and get a nicer blade. I'm medic in a busy system, and a steel junkie, so the composite and the S30V blades are at the top of my list.

I am not sure which steel is superior, but I like the G10 scales more than the noncoated stainless. This fact alone may push me to the G10 with S30V instead of the composite blade.

Also a related question, Kershaw doesn't make a G10 in 14C28N do they? My buddy didn't have that information readily available, and I want to ensure I get the S30V model if I go with that one.

Any suggestions?

I really want the Damascus with G10 but he can't get it. :(

Thanks Kershaw Forum!

You can pick up a composite leek for half the price of a G10 leek and I'm sure the blades of both are pretty much equal for blade retention.. If you want grip and s30v id go with the leeks big brother the blur. Nice size and weight.

You know, I want a frame lock, and Just realized the g10 is a liner lock. Sooooo.......unless someone gives me a compelling reason, I will probably go with the composite blade.

Is the composite blade quite a bit better than the 14c28n blade? I like the black dlt scales better than the stainless scales. Maybe keep both and switch the scales? Lol

Keep the DLC leek and get a G10 leek. Then swap the right side of the grip for the DLC framelock. :D

The G10 is seriously rough in stock form. Much rougher than any other Kershaw G10 I've felt.

I've heard/read of people who have sanded them down and am very interested in trying this on mine.

I second this motion!

Then you have the best of both worlds, black frame lock, and a grippy G-10 on one side, with a great steel.

I have just been looking into comparisons between D2 and S30V, they are pretty similar from what I can tell. D2 will need more care to prevent any rust spots, S30V is stainless. Edge retention is about the same, sharpening is similar, you might be able to get a thinner edge on the D2 for better slicing.

It really depends on if you want the composite blade look or the stonewashed, the stonewashed will definitely show less scratches over time.

?? Wouldn't that look silly?

I wish I could have a nice steel with the dlt scales.

My favorite high-end steel leek is the Random Leek in S30V with the flat grey coating throughout. Very slick piece.

s30v hands down! You can't realy get a better edc in my opinion. I have many in fear some day I will no longer be able to get them and give them to my close friends for birthdays and so on...

I owned both, and I traded the Composite one away just because I knew it wouldn't see use over my G10 or Damascus Leeks. I do have one complaint about the G10 Leek, in that it's pretty aesthetically displeasing to have the thicker scales of the G10 with such a thin blade, it looks kind of ridiculous. Ideally, I would trade the G10 handles for a normal steel framelock, and then stonewash the framelock and use it in conjunction with the stonewashed S30V blade.

That's what I'm leaning towards. Buy a G10/S30V model and switch the blade out with the DLT coated version.

S30V in DLT framelock scales!

I've always though of making a frankenleek out of the steel framelock, G10 and liner and the composite blade.

So a steel frame lock, the liner lock, g10 and composite blade? Huh? I'm missing something very vital I think.

Something I've been wondering about- how strong is the composite blade? Maybe it doesn't matter in the Leek design because the blade is very thin anyway so you shouldn't be doing any prying with it, but I wondered how well the composite edge was bonded to the spine of the blade.

(And BTW I own the S30V/polished G10 version that I bought many years ago.)

He is saying that he wants to use the composite blade, the steel framelock on the right side (clip side), and the g10 on the left side.

I don't think the g10 is really rougher on the leek than on other kershaws. The checkering/texture has larger ridges than on other knives so it feels slightly rougher but I don't think it's polished at a lower grit. Just my opinion. I love my s30v leek. You can't go wrong with one.

S30V in DLT framelock scales!

This is what I did and love it (yes, it's dirty in this pic)

Or you could get the TGRYST if you like the tanto blade. It's a frame lock with S30V steel.

Precisely.

I actually saw an ?OD-1? at Walmart today that was half/half. I understood then. Lol. I was like, "now I get it!".

I think I'm going to get the S30V/g10 and switch the blades. The more I play with this DLT coated frame lock, the more I enjoy the feel.

I sanded my g10 leek down, as it was pretty rough. Just a pass or two to knock the roughness off did the trick.....i wish they made the random leek in a plain edge, and ide me all over it!
