Leek G10 Scale

I have a bit of a Leek fetish, and want to do some embellishing.

I was wondering if anyone has made an unlined G10 Leek scale that accommodates the Speedsafe System.

I like the framelock for aesthetics and cool factor (strength is nice too, but apples, letters, and woodcarving generally don't test the lock much) and I like the unbalanced look of a G10 scale on one side, and a framelock scale on the other. I don't want to buy a G10 Leek, nor do I want a lined G10 scale off a Leek.

Can anyone point me in the direction of a scale maker who can create such a part? If it hasn't been done, I'd have no problem mailing off a Leek scale to use as a template.

the speed safe requires at least one liner to work, the sprng bar needs to be inclosed and needs the half moon cut out for the spring bar to fit into

Sorry, I thought it was implied that the nested liner would stay when I mentioned accommodating Speedsafe. Of course, in my infinite wisdom, I said unlined. Doh!

This is instead of the full, exposed liner on the production G10 Leek.

You should contact BarryH on the forums. He has done numerous scales for forum members and did a great job on my Sebenza scale

I thought about doing this a while back. I was planning to use an unlined G-10 scale for the non-framelock side. I got in touch with a maker who said he could do it.

The more I thought about it, the less I liked the idea. I have a cheap Boker with no liners and the stop pin fitted into holes in the G-10. I don't think the G-10 is strong enough to use this design with Speedsafe, since there's going to be a lot of impacts on the stop pin. I was planning to remove the Speedsafe. The maker said he could drill a depression in the blade for a ball detente. Still, I didn't like the idea of the stop pin getting wobbly as the hole in the G-10 enlarged from use.

I also have a couple higher quality unlined knives with G-10 handles, and they use stop pins that are held in place by screws through the handle slabs. I don't know how you'd do that with a Leek though. In the end, I gave up on the idea.

If I were going to do it, I'd try to get copies of the liner and G-10 slab from the G-10 Leek. I think this would be the cheapest and most reliable way to do it. Nested liners would add to the cost and require more design work than a straight copy.

I think it would be worth looking into a group buy for the handle slab and liner. There are so many Leek fans on Bladeforums, and organizing buyers would make it easier to negotiate with whatever custom maker you found to do the scales. You'd get a better price for sure if you could guarantee a worthwhile number of orders. I'm not going to organize it myself 'cause I'm so lazy, but I'd be happy if someone else did :)

I know you're looking for a custom scale but I did something similar with standard Leek parts.

I'm a bit of Leek-freak myself. I'm anxious to see where this thread goes.

I totally forgot the Leek needs metal on both sides of the thumbstuds.

That sort of expains why you never see such a mod on a common blade.

Morrow- Thanks for the pics! Unfortunately, it confirms what I was fearing, the G10 slab is way thicker than the SS side even before the liner.
