Leek opening action sluggish

Recently My leek has gotten sorta sluggish on opening. Sometimes it wont even open all the way. Any tips for taking apart and returning to its original lightning fast action? Is this knife easy for the user to open and work on? Maybe the insides are just full of gunk?

Possibly torsion bar nearing end of working life. Email kershaw they will send you new bar free. Easy to work on as long as you have correct bit set like benchmade blue box to undo knife hex bolts. Peice of cake no worries. FARON BEST OF LUCK

I noticed the same thing with a couple of Leeks I bought. After I'd first bought them, I was still somewhat mesmerized by the 'cool factor' of the assisted opening. I spent a good deal of time just opening/closing it, and started to notice a weakening of the assist. Odd thing was, if I just put the knife down for a few minutes and resumed, it seemed to get it's spring back (for a while). Then, it'd start to slow down again. Made me wonder if there was a building heat issue with repeated flexing of the torsion bar. And this was with relatively new knives. Tends to make me wish the torsion bar was a bit more robust.

A lot of slow speedsafe blades I've seen were full of gunk. When cleaned, they went back to normal. I advise at least checking. Be sure the blade is open before you take it apart.

Yeah this happened with my Chive. It was really filthy in the little space where the torsion bar rests. I cleaned it out with a Q-Tip, and replaced the nasty gunky grease with some 3 n 1 oil (woulda used grease, but don't have any). Just outta curiosity, what kinda grease is in there? In case the 3 n 1 doesn't hold up, I would like to replace with something at least close to what was originally in there.

Recieved one new that was very sloth like. Polished both sides of the blade with 2000 grit wet/dry, and the liners/slabs. Also touched up the washers. They can get gunky easily too, but the polish/sanding helped in my case.

They come from the factory with a teflon based grease.
Pretty much any type of bearing grease will work fine.
Just a dab is all it needs.

I have a brand new chive that does not open for nothing. how to I contack kershaw for the bar and does it cost anything??

Go to their website, send them an email asking for some torsion bars, wait, and you'll get a few in the mail after a couple weeks! :D (yes free, that's their warranty)

No heat building issue with the torsion bars, just junk in the pivot/torsion bar cavity probably.

Thanks for the replies guys! The Leek was new in december, so its really not that old. I wouldnt expect the torsion bar to already be worn, but who knows. Ill try to take apart and clean to see whats in there, and at the same time Email them for new bars if they send em out so easily.

Just go to Kershaw's Contact Page, change the 'Subject' box to 'Warranty Service', the form will change, and you can request the parts you need.
