So who uses the safety on their Leek? I don't really like using it cause it makes deployment so much slower. However, I carry it loose in my pocket and don't want the flipper to bump against something and open.

So I'm toying around with the idea of grinding off the flipper (so that the back of the knife is flush when closed) and just using the thumbstud to open. I figure with the flipper gone, I wont have to use the safety or worry about it opening in my pocket.

What do you think?

That sounds possible. Have much experience grinding blade material off?
Just asking, because I don't and I'm thinking of possible things
that could damage it permanently.

Maybe someone here has done it before and we haven't heard about it.

No experience really. I was gonna take the knife apart, put the blade in a vise, and use a metal file on it. I KNOW that there has to be Leek owners out there not using their safety, I just don't know if anyone has removed the flipper to make it less likely to open in the pocket. I can open the Leek just as easily with the thumbstub, so I'm not seeing the negative part of removing the flipper yet.

The safety: My wife has one in her purse and she uses the safety. We also have a 3 year old, so in the outside chance he finds it in one of the inner pockets, the safety makes it kind of hard to do anything.

The flipper: hmmm... that's a new one. I've always thought the action on that knife was so sweet with the flipper. The thumb studs always seemed barely usable. do you use them a lot now?

Flipper: I take it back... the thumb studs work fine, I had never tried them. Whoda thunk it:)

It's YOUR knife...Remove the flipper if you want. However, I sure wouldn't. Why remove a great opening option?...Not to mention that it somewhat protects your index finger from sliding up onto the blade, should you need to stab at something hard & quick?

When you said that I chuckled a little. Sorry. ;)

Yah, but it was my thumb I sliced open this last time.:D...And that was my JYD II that bit me. Bad dog.:D.

I've carried a Rainbow Leek for years with the safety removed, me being the "real" safety, and it has never deployed in my pocket.

I don't think it would hurt it as long as you use the file like you said so you don't ruin the temper......but you would more then likely ruin the lifetime warranty. But it's your knife, fix it how you want it. I would also take note on what GM said about it keeping your finger from sliding forward onto the knife edge.

The day I got my leek I took off the pocket clip and safety and have carried it loose in my pocket problem free ever since. There's only been one time any of my speedsafes opened unintentionally and that was when I dropped my Leek on a hard surface and it opened slightly. Didn't even open all the way though.

I always use the Leek safety because my 4 year old sees me playing with my leek and even though he knows not to touch my knives, I know how curious I was at his age and like to keep the knife safe when I'm not around.

I love the flippers!

I knew there had to be some people that carried their Leek with out the safety. But would you agree that my assumptions are correct that it would be less likely to deploy in the pocket if the flipper tab wasn't there?
glockman99, I've considered what you said about the extra protection for the finger. The handle has an extra little lip on it that helps in that area. The flipper seems to only increase that lip by less than an 1/8". I don't think its absence will be that noticeable.

You should try out the Mini Mojito before you grind your Leek.
The safety is integrated into the flipper, so deployment is instantaneous. No dealing with the slider necessary.

Thanks kneedeep, but I already have a Mini Mojo. Awesome knife, just a little too small and I'm not a big fan of the Stud-Lock.

There are also the traction grooves on the flipper that MIGHT help your index finger not to slip forward onto the blade, but like I said before, it's YOUR knife so do with it as you need to.

I keep wishing Kershaw would use the Mojo's safety on some other knives too. Probably too complicated to make.
I love that you don't have that embarrassing moment when you start to flip open your Leek (or anything else with the slider) and nothing happens.

Definitely post some pics after you file the flipper off. Should make it look a little sleeker closed.

I've carried a Chive without the safety for a few years and had no problems. I tightened the torx screw on the safety in the un-locked position. I got a Leek and Scallion recently and did the same thing...no prob at all.
