Probably a dumb question, but here goes. I don't have a Shallot, but I'm wondering if the Leek blade could be swapped into the Shallot handle. I like the Leek blade length and profile but like a longer handle. The Shallot blade I could live without.

In a word, No. Completely different.

If you like the Leek shape yet want a slightly larger overall knife, look at the just released OD-1.

The blade on the OD-1 is 1/16th inch shorter than the Leek, but the closed length is 1/8th inch longer. The Shallot closed is only 1/4 inch longer than the OD-1.

Not sure why, but the OD-1 feels bigger than a Leek. By itself it looks bigger, too.

Wow--that was fast--and depressing. Thanks for letting me know. Actually I don't want a slightly larger handle. I like the Shallot handle as is but hate the blade, and the Leek is the reverse.

Guess I'l have to learn to adjust to the Leek handle.

"Hate" is such a strong word...try "dislike". Better, isn't it? ;)

Tom Krein :)

have him make the blade however you like

FWIW, you might just find that you like the Shallot's blade after you've tried it. I've never liked recurves before, but with the Shallot it's not a radical recurve and so is easy to sharpen on regular benchstones, and a very effective design for general utility work. Plus the design, a sort of modernized Turkish clip, is IMO quite handsome.

Besides the Shallot is just a heckuva knife, the SpeedSafe very robust and ergonomics excellent. And as others have said, you could of course have the blade reground if you don't like it ... but I'm betting you could change your mind after carrying it for a while. :)

I also have to suggest giving the Shallot a chance. I have the ZDP Shallot, and it really grows on you :)

Wow--hadn't thought of having it reground. IIRC Krein was doing flat-grinds on Spydies. Does anyone know a ballpark figure of what regrinding costs?

BTW, DoW and BoxANT--don't have a Shallot at present. Was mainly considering one for the swap. Some perverted instinct makes me want a smallish blade with a larger handle.

How can you change the Shallot?
I know, different strokes for different folks. But please don’t post any pictures of a Shallot with a Leek blade. It’s blasphemy. :D

The Shallot handle is awesome (I have a Leek, Delica, grip, mini grip, ect ect). It is not a "big" folder (ie. tyrade), instead think of it as a slightly larger Leek :)

Any way you slice it, it sounds like you need to pick up a Shallot -- which IMO is a real bargain, BTW.

Understand the desire for hand-filling handles even with smaller blades ... I cut down the blade on my Junkyard Dog II to 3.5" also removing some metal from the spine, and it makes a very nice working package (and also legal to carry in quite a few more jurisdictions.)

I'm certain Tom Krein could shorten the Shallot blade if you have him do a reprofile. Interestingly, I've thought that a "Random Shallot" would be a neat package; Shallot handle with a blade configuration like the Random Leek. But I have to admit the 3" blade on the Leek is a little short for my tastes, 3.5" would be much more to my liking.

Anyway, it's fun to have little projects like this ... keeps the imagination working. :)
