Left hand sheath

I made a left handed fold over pouch sheath by accident!!!!!!!
My template even had INSIDE and OUTSIDE written on it. Stupid me.
I'm still going to wear it though because it really doesn't matter I don't need to quick draw it and my sheaths stick in my pocket 90% of the time.

Well, if you are right handed and you use the sheath in a right hand pocket, you will find it is correct for that use. Pocket sheaths are just exactly backwards in normal use.

When laying out a pouch style sheath pattern for cutting, if it has an integral loop, the loop should always be on the right for a for a right hand sheath and left for a left hand sheath. If using a stitch on loop the knife edge should be on the left for a right hand sheath and visa versa for a left hand sheath.

As you noted, if you have notations on the template, then paying attention to that helps also.;)

It has an integral belt loop that is now wrong due to not paying attention. I seldom actually carry a fixed blade on my belt so its not a big deal.

Heh heh heh, yep, something I do on occasion (I am left handed btw) and its no big deal. Everyone does it. :D

Nice thing for me is I get a cheap sheath if the knife I'm working with happens to be mine. :)

The family does hear my frustration when I do that though. :o Sometimes its a little too loud DOH!!!!!!!

I'm right handed, and make all my sheaths for standard right carry. But I really should make most of my belt sheaths in left pattern. Because 99% of the time, I have a 1911 on my right hip, so if I belt a fixed blade, it usually ends up on the left...edge forward. So far I only have one lefty sheath, and it was one that just came with the Boker Tunnel Rat....but not a knife I have carried yet. It's just a little too chunky for office carry. ;)

So now this has got me thinking. Has anyone made a sheath that is convertible to right or left carry with spine forward in either configuration?

What if I made a sheath that the lower sleeve portion is finished and/or decorated on both sides. Then make two back sections (one for left carry with belt loop, and one for right), that is somehow anchored to the side of the lower sheath. Making it convertible left or right.

Awe crap, I hate it when I start having crazy build ideas. They are usually the projects that bug me until I at least start, then sit unfinished for years, or until I decide that it was simply a bad idea.

I've made many sheaths that go on either side. This one is for a Fiddleback Forge knife.

This thread has got me thinking about years ago when I worked with a few guys that carried their knives on there right hand side , but used left handed sheaths .
The job was preparing Deer carcasses to be lifted out by Helicopter . The easiest technique to put a cut in the Hock of the animal was to hold the knife in a backhanded - reverse grip and it made it easier to keep hold of the knife while threading a strop through the Hock .
The wrong sided sheath meant that when you retrieved the knife from the sheath it was correctly positioned in your hand .
This post adds nothing to help your dilemma , but just thought I'd share .

bflying, I call this style The Slotted sheath. Can go 360 on your belt, edge forward, spine forward, you choose. Just let your belt out a notch.

I have realized that is actually no problem to take a knife out of a left handed sheath twist your hand and its out

Beautiful sheat Dave. Is there any reason to not use something like that for folders?

Thanks Macan. Ya know don't know why it wouldn't, I've never tried it. This is my pancake sheath version 2.0 See how its just a pancake folded over?

Dave, your sheath reminds me of wine or fine art. The layman may not see the quality at first glance, but a critic would. Lovely work on that one.

Yes the single loop sheath is exquisite here is my botched left hander.

I have to do a little reverse twist to draw the knife. No biggie.

Don't look like a botch to me, looks like an on purpose crsoodraw to me. Thanks Anthony.

Or the next time a pattern gets flipped, you could just stitch it rough side out. They have a certain charm too.

Are you me from the past? :P

We've all done it at least once. Ever since I did mine I've learnt my lesson and I mark all my parts carefully using a non-permenent chalk like marker called China marker. :D

I like your sheath. Nice work! :)

Dave: Your sheath is beautiful! Especially the shade of tan. :)
