I bought one of these, but I carry an Emerson Combat Karambit myself. You can get the Spydie for around $140 shipped on eBay (a little more than you wanted to spend though, huh?). You could also go with a Delica or Endura.

The G27's a great choice--I carried a 2nd gen G23 for a few years with a BarSto barrel, the 5.5lb connector, Ameriglo ghost ring night sights and a G22 mag spare.

check out the sog spec elite in vg10.ambidextrous --i'm right handed but this knife is designed so well that it makes me feel left handed when opening.

I would carry a waved emerson cqc-7 or karambit, set up for reverse grip draw. Also, just like a gun you need to learn how to use a knife effectively for sd. and remember training>tools

Good advice! I need to get back into my silat training--I've taken a few months off and it's definitely affected my fight ability.

Any of the Spyderco lockbacks are ambi-capable. There is nothing wrong with a Delica or an Endura, especially if it's a first knife.

Many of the Benchmade Axis lock designs are ambi-capable as well.

Pluses for the the Delica and Endura are that their clips are not only ambi but also will do tip-up or tip-down, according to your preference. And, for at least a while, you can get them with or without the wave-opening hook and get a trainer with the same wave feature, though they've been discontinued and are already getting a little hard to find.

If you go with a wave-type opening knife, promise yourself that you will train with a trainer. Either that, or make sure you know how to get yourself and any severed body parts to the nearest ER.

I am left-handed, and find it hard to find dedicated lefty knives. From my experience, the Benchmades with axis lock are the most truly ambidextrous knives available. Spyderco is good too, but a liner lock is not as good as an axis lock for lefties.

Definitely try the Benchmade 710. Very good quality, nearly 4" blade, 100% ambidex - works great for us lefties, quick to deploy, should be around $120. The full size Benchmade Griptillian would be another good choice, 3.5" blade, around $70, just as fast to deploy and ambidex.

There are surely other choices that would work well too, but you wouldn't go wrong with these.

Also consider a benchmade with an axis lock. Mainly griptilians, they are relatively cheap great quality, not ver aggressive looking, and the axis lock can be used easily with both hands with little practice

Get a waved spyderco endura, relatively cheap, will serve you well and easy to replace if needed. And get a waved training knife /drone/ to it as well. And start to learn how to USE your knife for defence, pick up some lessons.
