Most people are right handed but do you ever think about if you had to
use your left hand in an emergency oh **** type situation? How would
you cope with your right hand being immobilized/useless?

Yup...

Working on becoming ambidextrous! Getting there with the big movements and not dropping stuff, but lacking on fine motor control.

I'm right handed, no, wait a minute, I'm left handed. Nope, I'm right handed for sure, err, umm, nope, make that left handed for sure. Oh heck, guess I'm ambidextrous. :D

I'm definitely right handed and right eye dominant, but when I was young, my dad, who was left handed, but forced to do everything in school right handed, told me that I'd be doing myself a favor if I learned to do everything with both hands. So, I did. He was right.

I can forgive all the left handed folks for being generally weird but please
let me modify the question to " if your right or left hand were useless how
would you cope" In maybe twelve percent of police shoot outs the officer
is shot in the gun hand and must resort to the "less" dominate hand to
return fire. That is how this question came about.

I'd fair fine, considering I'm left handed. :p ;)

Same here. I also heard that all lefties are fairly ambidextrus. I play golf, guitar, and ukulele righty. I'm also right footed.

Who here hasn't cut their hand with a knife? I've screwed around enough and have cut myself a few times and had to revert to only using one hand (be it right or left) due to the other being bandaged...most Bladeforum members should have the most practice :D

BTW, I am left handed for writing, but I dominately use my right hand for just about everything else. I do carry a Spyderco Military on my left side...does that count? My Basic Training story is that I always shot left-handed, and when I went through Basic, we did all our practice on M16A1 rifles, and mine didn't have the brass-deflector. By the time they scrounged one up, I had tried shooting right handed, and it's stuck with me ever since...I did score expert both right and left handed however :D

samme her! I'm lefty but the eye I use for sights is the right one, so for small arms I use my left hand, and for carabines, riffles or shotguns I use my right arm :D I do practice gun training with both hands, but hell...you make a point, I've never trained my right hand to use a blade! not yet...

Geeze! Well, in that case, I can still carve with my right hand as I've don'e that before. But then, I wouldn't be in my right mind. :p :footinmou :D

I'm left handed as well and had a problem with the majority of folders I've bought over the years. so, I decided to up and get a cs triple action for the express purpose of training my right hand into some dexterity.

since then, I've taken to calling it my "stupid hand". I've got the opening sequence with that blade down to <2 seconds but thats a lifetime in some situations and nowhere near fast enough for comfort.

on another note, I've finally decided to buy a ambi folder for myself- a spydie manix most likely.

as far as handguns go, I've discovered I have no real weak hand... just a weak right eye.

I'm a rightie, but I tought myself to shoot with either hand years ago when I was shooting PPC as a hobby. Figgured that it could be a life saver but never had to do it for real.
Enjoy!

In a climbing accident, I broke fingers on both hands! I had casts/splints on my left pinky; right thumb, index and pinky. Talk about having two clubs on the ends of your arms. Every-day activities such as going to the bathroom, getting dressed, eating, etc. were new adventures.

More recently at a shooting match, one of the scenarios had the shooter starting laying on the ground, shooting over an obstacle, using the weak hand. It was a real eye-opener.

Just some personal antecdotes to spur additional thoughts.

Think about it, could you right now, dump a magazine with your off hand
and reload with the same hand? If you are r/l handed could you reach
across your body and draw and present your knife? My guess like myself
is that you would be surprised at how difficult this is. There is a big diference
between being armed and actually being able to use your arm in a competent
manner.

For a model 1911;
place index finger on magazine release, press to dump mag, if it hangs up or even if it doesnt...
place pistol under right arm pit (pull mag if necessary).
reach to spare magazine with left hand insert into pistol,
grasp pistol, release slide, take aim...
Not at all difficult... but slower than reloading with 2 hands.
Wheel guns are much more difficult... especially with the twist to releast style of speedloader.
As always practise makes perfect.
Enjoy!

I've done a little one hand practice loading, inserting the mag and chambering a round with my .45acp. It can be done, but is slow. Shooting with my off hand is a real adventure sometimes, especially with a sidearm. My dominant eye is in charge and more practice is definitely needed.

As far as presenting a knife with off hand, I found that a left hand cross draw, horizontal carry works great for me. The knife is on my strong side for fast and easy access, but set up for left hand draw as well.
