I want to keep my knife horizontally on my back right side (so I can grab it with my right hand) would I want to get a right or left handed sheath? I believe it would be left handed but I just want to double check before purchasing.

Not that it matters but it would be for the Fallkniven F1....illegal to carry in my state but better to judged by 12 than carried by 6.

Thanks for your help.

Edit: The laws in NY are very weird. You CAN carry a knife that has less that 4 inch blade and is less than 8 inches in length (as long as its a fixed blade) the Fallkniven F1 is technically illegal by 1/8 of an inch.

I don't think you should have said you're going to break the law.
And to that last point I'd say that without lots of training and practice you are still likely to be carried by 6 if a SD situation arises.

In no way am I condoning breaking the law.
RH sheath modified for horizontal carry either front or back.

Im a black belt in MMA and a purple in BJJ....I can defend myself just fine but with what's been going on, its better to be prepared. 1 or 2 people is OK but 5-6 is a different story, so yea I decided to get a knife.

That's definitely a good thing.

Just remember that there will be some legal consequences if you ever have to draw and use it.

How many people are you planning to get jumped by and for what reason? I didn't think MMA had a belt system as it is, by definition, a mix of martial arts that all have various ranking classes based on mastery.

But I'm not an authority on this at all. My 10 year old daughter just got her red stripe on her yellow taekwondo belt. She's much more of an expert than I am as I have zero formal training in unarmed hand to hand. Im not aware of any weapons training with these schools of combat, so I wonder what that has to do with a knife.

In my opinion: don't break the law, and horizontal sheaths tend to kind of suck and not conceal well at all. I would go IWB or a high and tight kydex owb. I currently have on a fitted tee shirt with a Cold Steel Tai Pan lashed to my weak side hip as a cross draw. I am using the built in sheath openings in the kydex to hold the knife higher than if i were to use the belt loop that came with it.

If you’re gonna break the law and risk catching a weapons charge, you might as well carry a pistol. Better yet, get some training and a carry permit.

you would be correct ... MMA is a blend of all martial arts and fighting styles not a stand alone with belts awarded.

and if someone wants to carry a fixed blade concealed I would recommend a kydex sheath from one of the sheath makers on our forum with a tek-lok or soft loop setup with a canted IWB or crossdraw ... and I highly do not recommend breaking the law ... "if" you are trained then stick with what you are trained in and within the limits of the law.

Not gonna talk about the legality, but I do agree with the comments of obtaining the permit and get training with guns.

For scout carry leather sheath, many use a strip of leather strap for retention, but not every knife is a good candidate for the setup. This youtube video talks about that:

The f1 sheath Im seeing will not be easily be modified for horizontal carry. It’s a nice knife but not for how you intent to carry it for.

Look for something smaller. That has a sheath that has a belt loop with different carry option and is reversible. Kydex is the way to go. Something that has holes so you can attach soft loops or a molded kydex belt loop or J hook.

The knife itself, for easy of carry can have a 3 inch blade length and still perform well.

Im not going to get into the self defense aspects because “General” isn’t the section on the forum to discuss that aspect.

1. Have you seen the news?? I live in NY. When they attack people they aren't exactly being polite and respectful about it.

2. Yes MMA is a mix of martial arts (typically wrestling, BJJ and some striking art) the school I went to, and eventually owned a location for had belt system. Probably because it developed from a TMA into MMA, but MMA has become its own martial art.

3. I certainly haven't trained a LOT with weapons training, I never bothered with the bow, nunchucks or anything I couldn't carry. I also training about a year and a half in Ku Fung, I've done a good amount of knife and gun disarms. Not all that much USING the knife bc I honestly never imaged myself carrying a knife.

NY you WILL NOT GET A CARRY PERMIT!!! Nooooo way in hell! Unless you can 100000% convince the state that you are walking around with a lot of money. It's nearly impossible. Upstate NY maybe, anywhere near the city, won't happen

I already have a tactical key and a CRKT neck knife. I also had cold steel mini hunter but I lost it =(

Thanks I appreciate that.

I'll suggest few things.

1) Consider having the 1/8" of an inch taken off by a knife maker. The cost of doing it and making it legal is probably worth it in the long run if you are dead set on the F1.

2) Reconsider your choice of knife to make it legal. It looks like the basic F1 is $125. Linked from Bhq for reference.

3) Consider getting mace/pepper spray. Last I heard, pepper spray was legal but you need a permit. Most pepper sprays shoot 10+ feet giving you a bigger buffer zone to the threat(s).

Good luck

I live in CA in a county where CCW permits are not granted, so I know how that feels.

I carry Fenix PD35 flashlight and if I'm feeling particularly worried pepper spray. These days just to avoid touching number pads I'm also carrying a 'tactical' pen (really any rigid metal pen, like a metal sharpie, would do).

The flashlight is an effective striking tool, is 100% legal to carry, is more used than any knife I carry, beats trying to use your cell phone to look under couches and desks, and is allowed in every place that has a metal detector (like a pro hockey game or on a plane). Pepper spray is a mostly effective standoff weapon and is legal to carry almost everywhere. I then carry whatever knife I feel like carrying, often a Swiss Army Knife or a traditional folder.

I also particularly dislike scout carry and, if I want an easily available fixed blade knife prefer to carry horizontal cross draw in front of my left hip (using a right hand cross draw sheath). The knife is very available to both hands. I don't know about conceal-ability as it is illegal in this state to concealed carry a fixed blade knife.

I would also add:

Don't get jumped in the first place. If you do get jumped and it's 1 or 2 people the point is to get away, not to win the fight. If you do get jumped by 5 or 6 people and you can't get away it's (IMO) unlikely a knife will help you anyway as it only takes one person to pin your knife arm down (either having been stabbed or not) leaving 4 or 5 people to kick your teeth in.

Sounds like you're sensibly prepared already. A folder like the Spyderco Military would be fast(er) to deploy than a sheathed FB behind the back
