I have recently taken up shooting and am totally hooked! I have been looking around and shooting a few different pistols trying to find which one I really like and will be my first handgun. As the title says I am a lefty. Any left handed shooters out there with views on lefty friendly guns????
I shot a Sig 226 and loved it but it wasn't lefty friendly, the Beretta 92 seems good but I haven't shot it yet. I am mainly interested in 9mms. TIA

Glock pistols.

I am also a "Lefty", and I have found Glocks to be almost perfect for me. I release the magazine with my Left index finger, and release the slide the correct way...By pulling-back the slide, and letting go of it.

Again I echo glockman, Buy a Glock. I too am lefty and find it easier to drop mags with my left index finger then my right thumb(almost like it weas designed for lefties). Glock pistols have no safties or decockers which are on most other firearms and are not very lefty friendly. By the way glockman your right, the lever is a slide LOCK lever not a slide RELEASE lever, now just tell the rightys that...lol

HK USP in any flavor.

Truly lefty friendly...

Have you looked at the H&K P7? It is 100% ambidextrous. The mechanism is unique, but it works extremely well and is probably both the fastest and safest design ever produced. As an added bonus you can do everything, including release the slide, in exactly the same way with either hand. It's not cheap, but it is worth the price!

look for factory refurbished units. They generally sell for 2/3s of what a new one costs.

Thanks guys for the info. I am yet to be introduced to the world of Glocks but they seem to be one of those products that once you try them you never go back. I have shot and H&K once but it was the first semi auto I shot and so I wasn't really evaluating it - more concerned with hitting the target and trying not to flinch when it went off

I think I need to go back.....

As a lefty and also a big fan of HK I can heartily endorse the P7 or USP as a truly ambidex 9mm. Both shoot better than most 9's anyway, which is a bonus ! The new USP with the neoprene "bush" is even hotter. Go for it - it's only money !

Nick,

Of course I'm right...I'm a Certified Glock Armorer.

Dr van Nostrom,

If you get a chance to fire a Glock, by ALL MEANS do it! You will be very pleased by the low recoil "shock", that is due to the low "bore-axis" and polymer frame that all Glocks have. I have two 10mm pistols...A Glock model 20, and a Colt Delta Elite (Enhanced)...And the "felt recoil" difference between the 2 pistols is IMPRESSIVE. The Colt beats the hell out of my hand, while the Glock is very "easy" on my hand.

Note: I had to "edit" this post, as I guess I'm not allowed to say "*****-cat" (pu$$y-cat)...

Interesting point glockman! I thought w/Glocks the polymer frame = more recoil! Now I AM really interested, they also seem good value for $$. What model(s) would you recommend???

Dr van...,

Since you are used to the 9mm, you might want to try-out either the "compact" model 19, or the full-sized model 17.

The standard Colt Single Action Army was of course designed to be used in the left hand. Perhaps because the saber was considered the primary cavalry sidearm of that era.

The Bersa Thunder 9 is the only pistol I have seen that has ambi controls for the safty and slide lock. The mag release is handy and fast with the trigger finger. I sued to not think much about these guns but the quality has really increased. At first glance I thought it was a Walther P88.

The other gun I have seen that works well for leftys is the Walther P5. Same lever used for the slide release/decocker, European style mag release in heel of frame, also eject left.

Both guns are surprisingly enough hard to come by.

There might be some others I have not seen. The hardest thing for me shooting left is the slide release.

Good luck,

ts

Guns are for show. Knifes are for Pros.

I shoot equally with both hands, and in my opinion, the best value in an almost perfect ambidextrous pistol is either the Ruger P-93, the Ruger P-94, or the Ruger P-95.
They are all available in 9mm, safety\decockers are ambi, the mag release is also.
Reliability is equal or better than what I have found with H&K, Sig, or just about any other DA 9mm. The accuracy is rather impressive as well, sub 2" groups,(10 rounds, 25 yards, with the P-94 40cal. nuff said.
