As I'll be going there on vacation, can someone tell me the legal length for carry knives in Ohio and Pennsylvania? Thank you.

Well as far as I know(I have yet to find one on the books), there is no "limit" on blade length in Pennsylvania. Just do not carry an auto.

none as far as I know in the State of Ohio.

There may be city regulations depending on where you go. I've heard there is a 3" limit in Akron, but I honestly don't know about that one.

Weapons laws in Ohio are kinda funny. Basically anything carried with the intent to cause harm can be considered a deadly weapon. Carrying a 4" AFCK for utility in most places in fine.. carrying it for self-defense, or rather, stating that as your purpose, is baaaaad.

NO concealed weapons in Ohio, and no permits either

just a crappy "affirmative defense" law.

My family members in Ohio have always told me that there is a 3" limit on blades in the state. I can't confirm or deny this but I don't carrying anything over 3" there. PA is pretty much wide open from what I can tell from my research of laws at the local college and my conversations w/ local and state police. I can say that I've never been hassled in PA for carrying everything from an Emerson Commander to a Sifu. The laws seem more directed to opening mechanisms not blade lengths. Have fun on your vacation!

FullerH,

Hre are the laws in Ohio and PA.

Ohio - 2923.12. [prohibits carry and concealment of "any
deadly weapon" except for self-defense, without explicit mention of knives].
- 2923.20 Unlawful transaction in weapons. (A) No person shall... (3) Manufacture, possess for sale, sell, or furnish to any other person other than a law enforcement agency for authorized use in police work, any... switchblade knife, springblade knife, gravity knife, or similar weapon... http://www.knife-expert.com

Pennsylvania - Pa. C.S.A. 18.908. Prohibited offensive
weapons. (a) Offense defined.--A person commits a
misdemeanor of the first degree if, except as authorized by law, he makes, repairs, sells, or otherwise deals in, uses, or possesses any offensive weapon. (b) Exception.-- It is a defense under this section for the defendant to prove by a preponderance of evidence that he possessed of dealt with the weapon solely as a curio or in a dramatic
performance, or that he possessed it briefly in
consequence of having found it or taken it from an
aggressor, or under circumstances similarly negativing any intent or likelihood that the would be used unlawfully. (c) Definition.--As used in this section "offensive weapon" means... any... dagger, knife, razor or cutting instrument, the blade of which is exposed in an automatic way by switch, push-button, spring mechanism, or otherwise...
- also see 24 P.S. 13-1317.2. re: students bringing weapons on to school property.]
Pennsylvania case law:
Where opening knife required lock to be released, and once lock was released blade could be exposed by flip of wrist, knife did not have blade which could be "exposed in an automatic way"... by "otherwise" legislature referred to knives that were opened by some sort of mechanism which is not a "switch," "push-button," or "spring" mechanism but still a mechanism... Though some uninformed Pennsylvania residents still subscribe to the "finger measurement test", which obviously has no legislative basis.

While in PA, you might want to also go easy on carrying dirks and daggers (ie - double edged fixed blades). Word of mouth among the citizens and knife shop owners I have spoken with is that some of our guardians believe such knives serve no other purpose aside from shivving a human being.

Oh, BTW, there is one heck of a privately owned and wonderfully stocked knife shop in Intercourse (!), which is up by Lanchester, PA. Very knowledgeable owners and lots of goodies.

actually, that's Lancaster...i think it's on Route 30 but i'm not sure. it's Amish country; very beautiful (unless you're looking at the business end of a horse trotting along!). The knife shop is extensively stocked there- but kinda pricey. either way you'll find something new that you like. I'm in Northeast PA. basically been told to keep it at 3", no push daggers or double edged knives...

I will be visiting Pa in August...though about taking my 45 but figured I would take my MadDog Freq Flyer,Stiff Kiss and my Benchmade.Hope to not run into any problems ,I know how the area was years ago..hope it hasnt changed much (McKeesport,Pa). Any good knife shops in that area ? Havent confirmed a rent a wreck yet....

Pa.`s only really enforced knife law is no autos. Double edges are okay with all the LEOs I`ve talked to. The main thing they all tell me is just don`t do anything with your knives you shouldn`t be doing.

FWIW .45 Guy Pa. can issue out of state carry permits. Montgomery Co. used to be the place to call. Marcus

As stated above, Ohio doesn't have a restriction as to length. That being said, this leaves it up to the individual officer. The general concensus I have heard from State troopers, county, and Columbus PD is 4" is the mark they look at. The farther away from the larger cities, the greater the length. I heard a deputy say he didn't care if someone was carrying an 8" fixed blade. From many of these officers and a defense attorney, I found that a CCW charge for a knife rarely leads to prosecution. When someone is charged, it is usually to add to other charges, give police a reason to get you off the street or, just to cause you grieve.

Thanks for the heads up guys. Now I can carry my BM720 w/ peace of mind when I visit Ohio. Leave it to family to steer you wrong
