Legal Fixed Blade Carry

I have not had the opportunity to carry a fixed blade knife, but I think that it has its merits. The reason many folding knives are so expensive is due to the fact that the lock takes up a good deal of money to make and assemble. Legally carrying a fixed blade could be cheaper and just as effective, seeing that a handmade fixed is just about as much as a production folder. If the state you live in allows fixed blade knives to be carried, do you think that it is a better idea to buy fixed than folding? Any other thoughts will prove helpful.

Carl, assuming you are intending to carry the blade for self defense, I believe a fixed blade is far more effective than a folder. First of all, you only need gross motor skills to bring the blade into play in a defensive situation. This translates into bringing the blade out of concealment/carry to a defensive or attack posture much faster and much more reliably than fumbling to open a folder while under stress (which you WILL be experiencing in a defensive situation). If you must carry a folder, I would recommend any of Emerson's knives with the wave feature. This enables you to simultaneously draw the knife from your pocket and open the blade. It's a marginal advantage, but an advantage nonetheless. You can check out the website for a look at the wave feature @ www.emersonknives.com

This is my humble opinion, but I hope it helps.

If I was faced with the option to carry a fixed blade or a folder for the same purpose, I would think really hard about it - for about 2 seconds! Then I'd slip my fixed blade into it's sheath and go about my business. I don't fully trust ANY folder. Axis lock, rolling lock, new super duper lock, whatever. No folder can compete with a fixed blade for reliability. There are times when I have to carry folders, but it's only because I can't get away with a fixed blade everywhere.

Don't get me wrong - I have TONS of folders and I like them all, but I don't trust them like I do my fixed blades. This is all strictly my opinion...

as far as strength goes, ya cant beat a fixed blade imho - my only prob is that i like to conceal them, legal in my state, but hard to do in the summer - last winter i carried a gerber mark 1 double edge, but this winter will carry my CRKT companion w/on scene tactical sheath - i have about $60 in the knife and sheath, and it is a winner imho - but really the only downside to me is that ythey are difficult to conceal in the summer, i usually tuck in shirt, so no IWB carry, and dont like neck knives, so in the summer, its time for my SIFU/Crawford-Kasper custom/CRKT Kasper/BM AFCK as a primary knife - why worry about concealment? because i also carry a gun concealed and dont want to get'made' in a restaurant, etc - i dont know just feel self concious about openly wearing a fighting knife on my belt for some reason - just my .o3 worth.....

I'm very remiss about looking up the law in my state. Many years ago, remember hearing that one can wear a fixed blade in the open without any probs. Just have no idea re concealed carry of a fixed blade. Better look it up soon, I guess.

Yes, they make a lot of sense. But, I am pretty oriented towards folders now, have been for a long time. Hard to think about having a sheath on my belt all the time with a fixed blade. But, want to try with my CRKT Companion -- if it is legal.

My favorite EDC is a Phillip and Barry Jones fixed blade with a 3" Blade and Micarta Handles.

I carry it IWB at the small of my back with my shirt tucked in.

It is discrete (I don't need to conceal a simple tool) and very handy.

In the old days, back when the Church of Tactical Truth was still active, one of the more controversial commandments was:

Thou shalt not fold thy knife

It made sense to me then, and still does. The only reason Not to carry fixed blades for self defense or utility is potential legal complications. Folders are for Fruit, not for Fighting
