Hi,

What's legal to carry in Atlanta? I'm going to the Blade show and I want to make sure my Emersons are not too big.

Thanks,

JD

I've spent alot of time in the Atlanta area and I believe that small is better. I heard once that the blade limit in Atlanta proper for lockblades is 2.5". The blade show is actually in Cobb County so that really should not be an issue for you. I would recommend staying in the 3" blade length area.

However, something tells me that the folks at Blade won't care too much if you are a bit over the legal limit. :D

Some guys down at the show carry 13" Kriss Stilletos, I doubt your little 3" bladed one hander isn't going to cause much concern.

Georgia · Local restrictions: * Atlanta: A blade over 3" that LOCKS is illegal. Another good reason NOT to live in Atlanta (as if one is needed.) Luckily my .40 Glock is perfectly OK. - Lee

Uh, how long has that little gem been around? I'll presume a CCW permit would cover a normal sized lockback as well as a pistol, or are they verbotten no matter what? Can't find any info on the net...

Georgia - 26-2901 and 26-9911a. It is illegal to carry
concealed any "offensive or defensive" knife.

I live in Atlanta and have lived in Georgia my whole life. It has always been my uderstanding that anything under 3" was O.K. to carry. I believe that the above is new wording that was put into effect a few (2?) years ago. Also there is a vague bit about public gatherings, but doesn't go into any detail about what is considered a public gathering. I have never had any problems with a EDC but it is something that everyone may wish to consider away from the show itself.

Check out www.KnifeArt.com there's a State-by-State knife
law summary, it's under "knife articles" and it's "State knife law summary" by Carl Donath.

That "public gatherings" probably has something to do with Freaknik which is no longer held anyway. My brother went down there twice for Freaknik. I personally never witnessed the madness. :D

Well, whatever the limit I think during the show all bets are off. We had about 15-20 people passing 60 or so knives around the dinner table...

The public gathering phrase refers to publicly owned locations and events on them. For example, the mall which is private, is not a public gathering, however the meeting at a park to discuss the new school is.

I don't think you really have to worry about the knife show, especially in Cobb County, that is the county that my jurisdiction is in.

Also, the Georgia Firearms Permit is only for firearms and nothing else. It is not a concealed only, you can carry open with it as well.

I think you will find most LEO in georgia to be fairly laid back and have no problem with knives, just as long as you don't cause trouble. I don't know any LEO including myself who will ever question someone about a knife thats just clipped in their pocket...

Danelle - is that the pit?

You going again this year?

Dan
