Sounds like Canada, bummer![]()
It does? I thought Canada was much stricter.
California allows any size folder (barring local law) and I do have a minor correction: There is absolutely no law whatsoever dictating what weapons a person can and cannot use in lawful self-defense. Self-defense is a case-by-case judgement made by a court of law. If a person is trying to kill you, you may stab the **** out of them until they stop trying to kill you.
That said, police officers have a personal distaste for "self-defense" being offered as a reason for knife carry. One reason is that declaring this indicates one views the knife as a weapon and not a tool, which is intent. Second is my personal hypothesis that police resent citizens doing their job for them (protecting themselves) and want to maintain a monopoly on all use of force with the understandable (though misguided) idea that this leads to less unlawful violence.
While California, despite what cops say, has no intent rules on knives, said cop still might try to take the knife and not issue a summons (willful forfeit) or may make an arrest only to have the charge laughed at and thrown out by the judge. So just refer to how you use it in a tool capacity.
Now getting to your locality cofade2black, Fresno County is cool, but Clovis has a local knife law. It is illegal in Clovis to carry any knife with a blade more than 3 inches long when loitering or engaging in a fight (SD doesn't count). Note that the knife does not have to be used in a fight, only possessed. {Clovis Municipal Code 4.6.01} So if you frequently engage in behavior that puts you at risk of these being an issue, get a <3" bladed knife. But if you don't generally get into trouble, it's fine.
