Hey guys, so heres the deal this summer, I am spendding a month in NYC, and i wanted to bring three knives with me

a Leatherman Juice S2 a midsize multitool with a knife, pliers scissors ETC

a Spyderco Urban Wharncliffe a one hand opening slip joint knife with bright orange handles and a 2 and a half inch blade

and a BOKER Vox Gnome a small belt or breast pocket mounted Fixed blade with a Kydex sheath and 2 1/8 inch blade

so with any of these three knives, could you forsee any problems? all would be carried openly and intended sheerly as tools, i have had no trouble with these in the past.

Cheers!

the Colonel

Greetings ColonelX: Do not carry any knife "openly". As per NYC law all knives must be concealed from view. An objective evaluation of the knives and tools mentioned would seem to indicate that they are in compliance with NY State and City laws. This however can become functionally meaningless if you and your knives come to the attention of certain segments of the law enforcement/criminal justice bureaucracy. The odds are you will not. It is your choice if you wish to take those odds. Most inquiries, by forum members, are concerned with whether or not the physical attributes of a specific knife are in compliance with NYC laws. They erroneously believe that this will determine it's perceived legality. You may wish to read post #10 of this thread. A small nondescript Swiss Army knife with many more tools than blades would probably be your best bet. OldDude1

any knife you can flick open with your wrist will be deemed a 'gravity knife.' i suspect that any knife where the blade falls open or can be flicked open after depressing a liner lock may be deemed either a switchblade or gravity knife.

probably any leatherman or SAK is gtg. that's all they sell now at Paragon.

do not carry the knife by clip.

Juice S2 is probably fine if you don't go anywhere that explicitly prohibits knives. The Urban is technically legal but I would be discreet about it and do not use the pocket clip. Keep it out of sight when carried. Don't know about the gnome. It's small but people might feel threatened simply because it's fixed.

Aove all, I would not carry openly. Also, some buildings, esp. governmental ones, will confiscate any sharp objects.

I know that I asked this previously, but I can't believe that a linerlock that you have to struggle to open, like a Queen or GEC would be a "gravity knife" in NY. You literally are on the verge of breaking your nails to open these knives.
I have a couple of traditional Queen linerlocks, the minihunter and teardrop. Blade lengths are 2 3/4" and 2.8". It is a struggle to open the blades, because of very tight backsprings. The governor of Caleeeforneeea could not flick these open.
Are these unlawful? I can't imagine how anyone could see them as weapons.

arty as you state they open, they should be fine. Carry in your pocket and as a tool not a weapon.

You could try the NYPD test that's been described on here--hold the back of the blade near the tip and try and flick the knives open that way.
