Saw this auction today (190202906967) with the following note in the description:

"NOTE THE SCHRADE USA HAS BEEN GROUND OFF THE TANG".

After looking at the seller's feedback, I would tend to believe the sale is legit. I know tang stamps ground off has been done before in a legit manner. But it occurred to me someone might try this with a Taylor Schrade. I haven't seen the China tang stamp on one, but would this be something to possible look for in the way of a scam in the future, or is the China stamp someplace other than where the USA stamp was?

I've never seen a China Schrade,so I don't know how they are marked.
I do know that some genuine Schrades that were rejects had the tang stamp ground off.
I got some from LT a few years back that had minor cosmetic deficiencies and ground tang stamps. As LT said, they were a perfectly good user but collector value is nil.
They still had the Schrade shield.
After looking at that auction,I'd be cautious. He has other Schrades on his store site that he said was made in Taiwan. He alos has other Schrades with ground-off tangs.
Beside being a horrible speller, his pictures are really shitty and out-of-focus.Even if you copy his pictures and massage them, you can't get much more info.
His shipping fee isn't too bad, except he ships priority mail when most of his knives would ship cheaper by 1st class mail.

I know the seller and have dealt with him several times. He is a square shooter. But yes, he does also sell some Chinese Taylor knives. I seriously doubt he would alter a Taylor to hide it's origin. The knives I have bought from him were all products from the auction, likely bought by the boxfull from BRK or SMKW. And he does combine shipping if you ask.

The earliest Chinese knives did not have the country of origin stamped into the blades on either side. Most often seen was a light, easily removed etch on the pile side. Now it seems, most have a "micro-stamp" of China on the pile side, sometimes partially hidden by the handle.

Codger,
Thanks for the info on the China markings. Like I said, after reviewing his feedback, I figured he was legit, but it just occurred to me that some lowlife might try this if it was possible.

Thanks again,

Dave

Dave, that was the hue and cry from this forum when the etched knives from China first appeared. And of course, few sellers revealed the etch or the origin. The flag on the Taylor boxes and clampacks raised a lot of ire. Some complaints were made by members directly to Taylor, and some even to the Federal Trade Commission. The packaging was, after a bit, changed to what is more commonly seen now. I'm not exactly sure just when they began stamping China into the blades, but within the past year, if memory serves.

It certainly does not help that sellers on the 'bay perpetuate myths like "Made in Taylor Brands new Schrade factory...An American company known as Taylor Brands recently bought Schrade USA. The purchase included all of Schrades machining and honing equipment, though it’s since been transferred to an overseas factory. The quality of each new Schrade product is on par with the meticulously crafted blades they’ve always been known for. I have been selling Schrade products for nearly twenty years, and I confidently believe that you’ll be pleased with the quality of their new generation of knives."

"Hurra..hurra! Stepa-rite-up!! See her crawl on her belly like a reptile!! Watch her eat a rat before your very eyes! Reptilena is a one of a kind freak of nature! Hurra...hurra!! Step right up!" :D
