My uncle has lived off the land and sea for years. He hunts big game, fowl and seal hunts annually up north. I'm trying to find that perfect knife for him for skinning and some general use but mainly skinning. Being on the sea ice and under wet conditions I was thinking that INFI as great as it is may rust on him. I've been looking at muks and wanting the busse version but I just realized that I may need a stainless. scrapyard has the 154 cm version but I still want him to have the best edge he can have. A little guidance would be nice here. i'm not married to the muk so let me know if theres a better option even if its not a bussekin blade. cheers

How about a Boss Street of some denomination? The anorexic models are awesome slicers with just enough guts to the blade so you can be rough on them. They're satin INFI, but I reckon with proper cleaning etc. after use, it would be a stout little all rounder.

My only issues with the cleaning is that I fear he won't clean it up very much. He's hard on gear and I don't want him to think the knife is junk after it shows a bit of rust.

Stainless will rust when exposed to sea water, it might be a little more rust resistant thatn INFI, but it won't be anywhere near as strong and won't hold an edge anywhere near as long as INFI does either. Perhaps a coated INFI blade might be better?

Take a look at the 154cm thread. I dont think there would be any probs with edge retention

Get the man a SAR 4 and send him a sheath and some scotch brite with it

If he's lived off the land for years, he knows steel will rust if neglected. If you're leaning towards the Busse-kin steels, I'm sure either of the Muks will outperform the knives he's used in the past and will be less likely to rust compared to what he's been using (assuming he's just been buying his knives at a big box chain store). SY's heat treat on their 154cm is proven. IF you can find a scrap muk, I'd go that route.

Good luck and I'm sure he'll be ecstatic with the gift no matter which route you go. You're a great nephew for thinking about this type of gift for him!!!

absolutely. Thanks folks. About the water, he showed me a sheath he made out of wood that ties around his waist with a bungee cord. The wood floats the knife so it can be retreaved. Awesome hey

That is an awesome idea!!!

The Muk, CABS, BATAC CG in Busse, The SwampRat HRLM or RMD with the coated blades may also be good. Hard to say in that environment if he will not do any maintenance. I think any of these would be good skinner's and most guy's will do basic maintenance on their knives and equipment.
