My French is rusty, been nearly twenty years since I last sipped wine in southern Belgium/northern France, but what I meant to say was "hunting knife".

Here's the deal, there's a rancher about an hour drive north of me that has an abundance of wild hogs on his property. Some time after New Year's, I plan to go up and launch a razor edged broad head through one of the big tuskers (not with my target bow, I have a 65# longbow that is nicknamed "The Black Death").

The hunting knife? Kumar Karda, not my beautifully carved wood handled one by Sher, I asked Uncle if he could dig me up or order one with a plain handle that wouldn't mind some blood and guts, because this one will see extremely harsh use (y'all ever butchered wild hogs?). Luck is indeed a lady, and in this case her name was Yangdu. She found it in the warehouse, better than I could have hoped for, with a handle that's not just plain and unadorned, but just happens to be horn (my personal favorite, and the black handled knife will be a proper match for that big black longbow).

Can't wait for the hunt, and the feast that follows will be dedicated in honor of Bill and Yangdu Martino. Ah, foaming mugs of ale and the delicious aroma of roast pork taken with a good long bow, for an archer it just doesn't get much better. Yeah, I know, I should have been born in another time. How do you know I wasn't?;)

That's how you do it

I've always thought it would be exhilarating to take one out with a spear. But I think I will stick with my M48A in 8mm Mauser, with the 197 gr soft points S&B sells, if I ever have the opportunity.

Ya know those teeth would make awfully nice handle for a karda!

I've been pondering hog hunting, if only I could find somewhere to go, and someone to show me the way to dress and later butcher the catch. Deer too for that matter, but I just like the idea of being able to go out any time of year and bag some free-range pork.

I don't know, Sarge, when America forgets the simple things, the right things- like harvesting one's own food and self defense, it will no longer be America. You weren't born in the wrong time. I worry about when there's too few of you left.

I do all my hunting at Safeway. It requires less skill. - Bruise

I don't know about this, either, Bruise. I find myself outclassed in the modern supermarket. Takes me twice as long to shop as the rest of the citizens and I don't know all the tricks of the sales, coupons, seasonals, and cosmetic foul play- like the meat dyed red to mask the old brown color inside.

My God! What a monster!!! I have also a 65# longbow, but I don't know if I would have the courage to try it on a such "sanglier"!! Not alone the first time in any case!!! Waouuuw!

Here are some exemples of hunting knives using in France -in particulary in Bourgogne- by the hunters for the wild boars :

They're effectively beautiful knives, high carbon steel (XC75), hand forged and zone hardened, I love them very much, but I prefer Himalayan Imports Khukuries!!!

Munk, you touched a nerve with me on food harvesting and supermarkets and such. I remember as a youngster out in the country everybody had a family garden, and if you grew more of one thing than you could use, you shared the surplus with your neighbors and kin. Nothing got wasted. I've had plenty a good meal of wild game and vegetables fresh from the garden. You can add all the artificial coloring and flavoring you want, store bought food'll never taste as good.

Stephen, it's not the boar you're stalking that'll get you, it's the mean old sow you weren't looking out for that will. Those are some beautiful knives, very rugged and functional looking. No plastic handles, no saw teeth/serrated edges, just good honest cutting tools. Who is the maker? One of these days I'm going to get a good French straight razor to go with my American, English, and German made straight razors. Thiers Issard has some limited edition razors with blades ground from hand-forged blade blanks, made more than a hundred years ago, and heat treated in molten lead. Such a razor would be a joy to own and use.

Flew into Florida about 20 years ago, after a 2-3 year absence. Was picked up at the airport and driven directly to the shed (out behind the house), there was a very large wild hog hanging in the shed. I was given an apron & a knife - Welcome back Yankee :) .

;) Sarge,I hope I have the right name for the right person.I would love to try that one day .FRANK C....

Sarge, you're dead on about the garden fresh stuff and the game. A trout out of the stream tastes substantially different and a hell of a lot better than the one I buy at Safeway.
