Les Suete - On the western shores of Nova Scotia's Cape Breton Island, damaging local winds are known as Les Suetes, derived from the word for southeast: "sud est". These south-easterlies are created when a frontal inversion causes a funneling effect over the Cape Breton mountains. As the winds rush down the side of the highlands, strong gusts develop which are regularly recorded to exceed 150km/h (94 mph).

I don't make a lot of full tang knives, but this is the first of several I'm working on at the moment. The moose antler handle slabs lend a reassuring heft to this handy light weight user.

So, I was doodling last night, drawing up some knives since I finally have all orders complete, and I swear I drew the exact same knife (with a slight variation in the handle) and said "Yep, I am going to make that one" I really like it.

Thank you folks.

Matthew B. - I think this a fairly generic design that I drew up, and I'm sure I'm not the first. I've seen a number of variations of the basic shape. There's a 5 1/4" bladed version on my bench as well.

Thanks again everyone.

I'm sure I have seen similar blade shapes before. But I don't think I have ever seen it executed in such a balanced way. The curve on the top of the blade is balanced by the curve in the handle, which is also neatly offset by the way you handled the choil.
The knife has a nice flow to it.

Super clean work. Really nice!

I like reading your posts as the names and descriptions are so interesting.

As a teen I sailed in those winds with my Dad and it's scary when you're down to a storm jib and it's still too much sail.

Barnette - That is a very nice compliment. Thank you!!

Stuart - I do a bit of sailing myself. A lot of people who have sailed the world's oceans understand that the waters off Cape Breton's east coast are some of the most unpredictable and dangerous to be had.

Sailing the west coast of the island however, .... well, that can be an even more invigorating experience!

Looks good, Blue... what a finish! I was just in Mahone Bay last week, house/farm hunting... isn't that only 4-5hrs from you? We could be neighbors soon!!!!

Rick

Rick - I'm getting a bit better at hand sanding at the higher grits and this one turned out nicely.

Mahone Bay is about 3 1/2 hrs from our outside of Pictou. Add an additional three hours to our house here in Cape Breton. Give me a bit of warning next time you plan on a visit.... we'll do tea! :D
