I was browsing another forum and there was a “show your Spyderco” thread and some of the knives posted were very early examples. I thought this was very cool.... pat pend info on clips, integral clips, etc.

The oldest of my 20+ Spydercos is only a few years old, so let’s see some of your early Spydercos.

The TCN Police was one of the first coated production knives in the US with that coating.

I'm not familiar with that term, TCN. Would love to know more about it, especially if it was mentioned in reference to the black Police model I posted. I haven't seen many of them, and it is a really great knife.

I believe it refers to titanium carbonitride :)

Thank you, that helped me to do a bit of research. Apparently called "Blak Ti", and apparently quite rare indeed, here's a quote from the Spyderco forum from back in 2005:

We did some Police models in 1996 with black TIALN (Titanium Aluminum Nitride) which is a coating over a gold TIN (Titanium Nitride).

We did 5 ea of the left hand serrated and 29 ea of the right hand serrated. We did the knife whole (when the blade is closed there is a small area next to the handle that is un-coated) and the clip and clip screws separately.

That appears to match my knife's appearance.

Super idea for a thread I am also looking forward to some of the pics as well as the information behind some of the older Spyderco offerings. My grouping if Spydercos has really transitioned from just a few of the new offerings to more examples of the older models. I will need to get some more pics :) of some others. Here is one I still use and carry often it is a Jess Horn Lightweight model c38 I believe. I think the blade grind and logo FRN scales are really unique:

I only had one from the white box era and a couple from the grey box era. All gone now, I think.

Quite a trick considering it wasn't introduced until 1990. Still a nice early model.
Ha! You’re right!
I meant 1992.

Pretty scairy that I’m at the point in life where I count by decades. (And still manage to get it wrong). :(

I edited my post, but in my defense, I was only off by one digit. :p
