So I found a used Ro expansion tank in the garbage that I want to turn into my forge. Going to line it with two layers or 1" ceramic wool insulation, held in place with.... High temp silicone? And then I need a heat source?? I want to keep it on the cheap as this is a new hobby and I don't have many dollars to invest. So I was thinking of a tiger torch (weed burner to some) or there's a kit on Amazon for 95$ that had the 1" venturi, flair fitting, and reg&hoss but still have to get the black iron nipples. All input would be awesome.
This is for mainly heat treating for now. Want to start with stock removal knife makin g

There are cheap propane forges ready to go that cost less than 100 bucks. This is one of those cases where you'll spend a more money building the forge than just buying one.

I'm in Canada and am having a hard time finding one. Can you point me in the right direction??

Canada, eh? I just looked on eBay for “propane forge,” not sure if they’re available up north there. :(

Building a forge is fun. However, building it less than properly usually ends up being not fun.
The wool needs to be covered with Satanite or a similar refractory. Silicone won't work. Don't run a forge with uncoated wool!
Everything you need for a forge can be sourced in Canada.

A simple venturi burner can be built from some scrap pipe fittings, and a simple blown burner (better idea) can be built from a used hair dryer and some pipe fittings. Depending on what you can scrounge up, a good forge can cost less than $100 to build. That will be for the ins-wool and refractory, plus a few firebricks for the doors and floor.

If the knifemaking/forging bug bites you, you can upgrade a properly built forge as needed. Better blown burner with air control. PID control, Idle switch to lower flame between heats, sliding work rest, etc..

The stickys has a good bit of info on forges and such. Use the Custom Search Engine in the stickys) to find dozens of old threads on building forges and burners.

The sticky all good things in one place doesn't seem to work any more that's a bummer
