Give me your input as for a good locking knife. I'd like to stay with a steel blade, but with all the searching I did yesterday on the web, I was surprised to not find many. They all seem to be stainless. I don't have a problem with stainless, but thought a good old carbon blade would be nice to be my carry knife. I can hack on it, but bring it back fast. NO COLDSTEEL please. I have a few of them and I'm not terribly impressed. Seems like if they spent more time and money on engineering and metallurgy instead of dvd's, they might have a better product.

Thanks

If you go with the Mtn. Man from Queen or Schatt & Morgan (same company), I would suggest the 1095. My wife bought me the Schatt & Morgan version in Goldenroot and it's a very nice knife. I've been reworking the blade and since I'm doing it by hand, it's going to be a long process, but I am seeing progress.

i have read good things about the Opinel knives, from france. carbon steel, flat grind, locking ring (a ring with a slit in it that you turn to block the pathway for the blade to close back into the handle. if you don't understand that, its okay. it will become painfully obvious if you hold one in your hand)

i don't have one...yet. they are pretty cheap too

i don't have any good sources, but perhaps a google search would turn up a good store

I like the Opinels both in carbon and stainless...with the locking ring. Ragweed forge and eknifeworks have a good selection and fair prices. Easy to sharpen.
Next choice would be a Case.

That mountain man is cool. Does the S&M version come in carbon steel, or only in 420???

Depends how big a knife you want. I bought a Buck 270 Alpha Dorado in 420HC. It's small (nice for EDC) yet robust enough to make fire boards etc. In fact, I liked it so much, I bought another in 154CM.

Check here.

It depends on when the knife was made. Mine came with ats34. I've been thinking about contacting Queen Cutlery and seeing if they will replace the present blade with a 1095 blade. Because I'm not a collector, I don't care if it has the original blade or not and the carbon is my preference.

I like the S&M better, but it was certainly more costly, and as you stated, it doesn't seem to come in carbon. I'm a little perplexed.

Surely no explanation needed if your willing to "put up" with a stanless blade.... BUCK 110. Game Over.

A lot of Benchmades can be had in D2 and M2. When on there website, find a knife you like and click on it. Then scroll down and see what steels are offered in that model.

Thanks for all your thoughts....I really like the Mt Man from Queen in 1095. I also like the Spyderco Manix, but the price is tough to swallow. Let me add one more criteria to my list...it needs to have a pocket clip. Although I don't like my CS knife as much as I originally did, it was my first clip knife and I REALLY like the idea. My pockets are full enough and my belt has a phone and gun, so I don't want a leather sheath also to hold a traditional locking folder.

Whatever you narrow your choices down to, hold each knife before you purchase.

I just stumbled across the Benchmade 940 in S30V steel. I like the steel and the knife has some good looks also...Any thoughts about it?

Amen Brother, I just handled a Manix and I will be ordering it this month.

I'm telling ya...it's quite a piece of steel. I bought a Manix C95 on ebay for $103.00 and one from Knife Center for $119.00. Someone mentioned he thought "the (Manix C95) price is hard to swallow," however (as I see it) if you're going to potentially bet your life on a knife...is a tad over $100.00 too much? My $0.02 for sure, but a well founded postulation IMHO. As I mentioned in that other topic, I never did (and still don't) care for the entire Spyderco line of blades, but Manix C95 is different. Dollar for dollar, this folder rules planet Earth. Again, my $0.02, and MHO. But before you criticize my claims. Hold the knife and cut with the knife. You may be surprised. :)

Incidently, I started carrying a folder because my line of work takes me into customers homes and one day a whack job of a rich lady left me alone in her living room with two BIG domermans who were eyeing me like a raw New York strip steak. At the time I realized that the only thing I had to defend myself was a table lamp, and that didn't feel too good. As a result, I subsequently purchased a Emerson SpecWar A and it made me feel a bit more prepared in the event things went bad. The Manix has made me feel even more prepared. Here's an article I assembled about the topic titled "Surviving Encounters With Dogs" over on my www.PreparedToLive.org website.

And -- once again -- here is the link to the Manix BladeForums topic...
