Ha, you wondered what that 'part the first' business was all about with the Savage rifle thread, eh? Well here's the second part. A gent on another forum regularly refurbishes old/vintage axes, and I've been trying to get him to to sell/trade me one for quite a while! Well he had to sell a few off recently to fund more projects, and my hawk-like monitoring of the FS area paid off.
Scored me a helluva motherload, such that I'm even selling off several other pieces. I got a very sweet little Dunlap, a Plumb, and a vintage Gransfors with ~21" haft.
As for the GAB, it's the most boring axe or tool that I've ever owned, in that it functions without any effort or complication. I'm actually a bit ashamed that I once thought I knew what a proper axe felt like. This splits wood like there was just a thread holding the two pieces together! It's a champ at cross-cutting thus far, though I've had less opportunity to test that.
The little Dunlap and Plumb are superb companions. The Dunlap is a little bit lighter and smaller, but both will still handle splitting chores for the fireplace with ease. By 'with ease', I mean even better than my GB Wildlife, or probably even my 19" wetterlings. It's sick. The hafts will be refinished, but that's fun work.
