Say you are in a "last ditch" situation where you are in the terrible position of wrestling a Zombie. You don't have the room to swing an axe or sword. I'm of the opinion that wide knives just aren't the greatest for piercing through a Zombie skull. You want something narrow to get through the heavily armored skull.

A couple of posters on this forum put up these "penetration" tools and they seem to fit the bill perfectly. The poster I.N.F.K used a mosin nagant bayonet and
Charlie_K used 1018 3/8" round bar stock obtained from the local steel foundry.
.

Nice thing about these is if your hand slips you aren't going rip yourself up. It's a highly specialized tool. If you were going to make one, what would you use?

Me?

DIY version

  • 7" of blade will go from the chin to the back of a skull. So that's the perfect length IMHO.
  • Mosin Nagant bayonet (I don't have resources to heat treat metal)
  • G10 handles won't soak up infectious material and is easy to clean / sterilize. Color = whatever shows Zombie blood. Easy enough to order raw materials online. Just need to wear a paper mask when working with it.
  • hole in the bottom for paracord loop. Prevents hand from slipping

Perfection

  • CPM3V steel for crazy impact resistance, D2 tool steel for to save cash.
  • G10 handles won't soak up infectious material and is easy to clean / sterilize. Color = whatever shows Zombie blood.
  • Mosin Nagant profile as there's not blade to cut yourself on and it's purely for piercing.
  • Maybe a 2" size hand guard to prevent slippage. Make it flat for ease of carry.

Severing the spinal cord a.k.a. chopping off the head seems much easier for a person and less taxing on metal to me. Or make something like a pick that will allow you to create some momentum by swinging. It just seems too difficult to push the tip through all that business.

Like a small war hammer / pick. Not a bad idea... but might get stuck.

Personally, if I really had to stick with a penetrating skull hit, I would use a pick ax or a hammer.

I thought I would never see one of mine pics on another thread. Here's another I made in a forge

I felt it was important to have the ring to stop my hand from sliding down, also would aid in extraction. So I would say a hand gaurd is a must.

Or a yari. When it comes to zombies, the japanese already perfected it.

EDIT: fyi, that is the core, it is not mounted yet. This one's blade is about 3 feet long

I just had another thought. You know how an american tanto is supposley the best for penetration against harder surfaces. Lets say perhaps a zombie skull. Well, I was thinking that but wider and maybe 4 or 5mm thick.

A 7" piercing blade puts you way too close to a Zed to be safe and the buggers never travel alone. Proper primary weapons for use against zombies have to have enough reach to destroy the central nervous system of the shambler from outside of its reach or to remove the limbs that it will use to grab and hold you for the bite ahead of a central nervous system strike.

Also, they travel in groups so you cannot afford to get locked in on one for fear that others are maneuvering to surround you. If you cannot wield the weapon against more than one Zed at a time you are dealing with a last-ditch weapon.

That said, I see a lot of very nifty looking last-ditch weapons here on the thread.

Lets hope there are more guys like you with common sense once Z-Day hits, that being said,my last ditch weapon or any anti zombie weapon will be my blade I dubbed "WW3"

The Khukuri on top,40 oz,3/8 thick,20 inches long, hair poppingly sharp.

Ramil839... the 'last ditch' aspect was kind of implied. I've edited the original post and made it explicit.

I've got a AR15's, Hawks and a now a HI WWII. They are all great if you have room to move.... not so great if you are in the very unfortunate situation of wrestling a Zombie.

Push daggers are the ultimate last ditch zombie weapon. They're the easiest to aim and control, and they pack the most punch (no pun in intended :p) of any small stabbing weapons. Very hard to drop/have knocked away from you, too. And they require no training. Even a 2 y/o can throw a punch.

Though... On the other hand, once zombies show up, laws about ballistic knives will go away.... :D

I've gon an 870 with wax slugs,I've never seen that much expanding at that cheap of a price (about 20-30c a shell),to get back on topic (somewhat),if i had to wrestle with a zombie i wouldnt be worried because i'd actually use protection (not that kind...),leather jacket, kevlar gloves, facemask and every possible exposed body part covered with bite proof material, but if i had to use an up close and personal weapon it would have to be a karambit,at least 4 inches of blade, hard to drop, easy to use and a solid amount of piercing power,Grease mentioned a push dagger, imo is just as good as a karambit,i just like karambits more.

Off topic, anyone else happy that lori is dead?Too bad about T-Dog though....

i don't get it, why piercing weapons? zombies don't have blood and their internal organs are likely out. i'd think a strong chopping blade is better. to be safe, put in either a rolled edge or a second/third microbevel for better cleaving action: splits them clean without the danger of them clumping back whole.

Those look like they would be pretty good last ditch effort weapons. I do like the ones with some sort of guard better since you have to put a good bit of force behind a strike that is going to penetrate a zed skull. I tend to prefer my blackhawk nightedge for this purpose though since I have stabbed it through coconuts and 1/4" plywood without too much of a problem due to its reinforced tip.

PS. I was really glad that Lori is dead

Huh, I forgot about those. I think I'd agree, those would be about as effective as a push dagger. And they looker better, too :D
