So easy to overlook, but so important for your feet. I only recently settled on socks that I love for hiking and backpacking. Ultimax from Wigwam http://www.rei.com/product/665668?vcat=REI_SEARCH

Traditionally, backpacking socks have always been thick, overly hot things that I hated. I am naturally warm anyway, plus where I hike it is usually hot. These socks are only slightly thicker than regular ones I wear daily, and they pull the sweat away from the feet and keep then nice and cool. I pair the taller ones with my military hot weather boots, or the shorter ones with trail runners and my feet stay comfortable even after a full day of hiking.
I also wear goretex lined Danners on winter backpacking trips, and these socks still are awesome even hiking in the snow. My feet stayed dry and warm.

After wasting money on expensive hiking socks, I found that the Dr. Scholls socks for diabetics work great. They are not too tight, so they don't impede circulation and they wick away moisture well. I get them at Walmart. Of course, I am in a warm climate. They might not be so great in the cold.

I'll have to check those out. I'm all for trying out a cheaper alternative.

i swear by my smartwools. their lightweight walking or hiking models are thin and feel like a nice nylon dress sock but the wool keeps feet feeling dry and comfortable even if theyre soaking wet with sweat. i couldnt live without them. ill never wear cotton socks again, they bunch up in the toe and get all cold and sticky.

I remember back in Scouts, the only real choice were the old fashioned wool socks, blech! The modern wool blends are much nicer.

I bought a ton of sample pairs of Wigwam merino wool socks a while back, so they are pretty much all I wear these days. I find them softer than my Smartwools, and they seem to hold up as well. Another good deal is the 4-pack of merino hiker socks that you can get at Costco for $10. I have a couple of packs of them and they are great. Thick merino socks don't overheat my feet even in hot weather, thanks to their temperature regulating properties.

I'm with Repro, nothing but Smartwool for me. I use the light hikers and have regular length and shorties for
Summer.

Even though I live in a tropical climate, I use heavy Smartwool socks because I like the addidtional padding. I have extremely wide feet and not many choices in footwear, and even the stuff in my size isn't a great fit. Plus, even though they are thick and hot-ish, the properties ofthe wool makes tham comfotable.

I bought a couple packs of the costco hikers. I like them and wear them as everyday socks, but they aren't as well made (both material and construction) as the Head socks that they used to carry. They also knapp up, but I'll probably buy more when these wear out.

after some savvy advice from some members here, I got some Poly-Liner socks to go with/under my smartwool and coolmax socks,
and they really work great. The best deals I've found are at campmor.

Merino wool socks for me, year round. Keep the feet warm in winter and cool in summer.

:thumbup:Depending on the season, some type of Smartwool socks. They even make the crew type for warm weather low cut shoes--KV:

I am getting a lot of ideas on other socks to try. After many blisters and sore feet, it's amazing to see what a different socks can make.
