Seasons Greetings All,
While everyone is relaxing after last night I thought i'd try to get some opinions on my next project--hot salt heat treating!
I have a well made 1/4" thick stainless steel salt pot 3 1/2" o.d.x15" long with a 6" collar at the top. I have one of Ken Reid's shorty burners on the way, for the heat source.
So--now the questions:-
1-How much space should there be between the pot and the liner?(fire chamber)
2-How thick should the liner be?-(I'm using kaowool)
3-What is the best way /thickness to apply the ITC-100
4-Any ideas on an outer shell-steel pipe? 40lb propane tank(new)?Other?
5-I plan on putting the burner on an angle at the bottom ,and an exhaust hole at the top ,to produce a swirl chamber-sound OK?
6-Has anyone tried mounting a steel deflector plate above the salt pot to divert any spray/eruptions-ideas?
7-This unit will be stored away between uses so is it safe to have it on casters, or should I just drag it outside for use?

Any other advise or suggestions would be appreciated.
Thanks for your time, Don

I don't know if anyone here uses salts for heat treating, if I were going to set one up I would talk to Howard Clark, Al Dipold also uses salt pots and is quite knowledgeable on this subject.
