Greetings all, (I can't believe I'm about to actually type this...) it's good to be back at work on a Monday morning! I only say this, because I had an exhausting weekend. But the first part of it was going to the first Chicago Custom show on Friday. My face still hurts from the grin that was frozen on it walking around looking at all the great knives and meeting star/stud makers. I thoroughly enjoyed this show, and hope it becomes a yearly tradition.
I only made one purchase, a Bob Dozier model-6 with natural/tan micarta handles and an IWB sheath. I love the look and feel of this knife, and the sheath is a very versatile one. Mr. Dozier sure knows kydex!
So, let's here from those of you that went to the show. Who did you see? What did you buy? (pics please!) Any amusing anecdotes?
Come on, let's hear 'em.

It's Monday afternoon and I'm still _IN_ Chicago! Can't find my way back onto the freeway! :(

(Just kidding. Stayed an extra day to visit with friends. Will post when I return to wherever it is I'm living this week - I've been on the road since August 26th  )

A great show!

Sorry to miss you, Mongo--I was only there on Sat morning.

Unfortunately, I couldn't buy anything this time, but I made a trade and got a very nice Cover slipjoint with MOP scales.

Had a good time hanging out with Danbo, as always. I met Neil Ostroff and cockroachfarm for the first time. I got to see some items in person that were previewed here on the forums--in particular, Don's bowie and Bailey's sword. Wow!

Mongo was right about this being a good show, and the makers I spoke with seemed happy about the promotion and the customers. I hope this will happen next year too.

Of course, it would have been nice to have a half-off admission fee for kids under 10; then I could have brought my daughter in and tried for the "cute daughter" discount ;)

Did anyone see the dagger David Broadwell had. It is mine and all I have seen are pics (which is cool). Sava called me and said it would knock my socks off.

Is he right?

(can you tell I am a little excited at this point.)

Well, I made out alright and had a good time doing it.

It'll blow the socks right off your feet :D Great knife. I droped it while looking at it but David said he could fix it ;)

Dude, you've got a cruel sense of humor  - don't give the poor Bastid a heart attack! ;)

I knew those bowies of yours would be a big hit Don - congrats on the award. I'll try to be there next year.

Well, it's a little sticky after I got done playing with it, but it's still an OK knife. ;) :D :D

And, the visual image of your naked feet is a little too much for me right now at lunch time. :p :D

Man just too many friends at that show this weekend :D.

Spent a good part of yesterday on the phone with Calvin and Sava listening to those two jokers rave about the show.

They said Ed W. really did a great job (as have all the makers on TKCL who attended).

I shoulda, woulda, coulda come up there with Calvin! :D dagnabit! Pesky stuff like work gets in the way.!

The naked feet I can deal with, but imagining why the knife is sticky after you had it, now that I have trouble with...

YOU have trouble with it? Just wait till Gus gets to see the knife! :)

He has not seen my naked feet either (and you thought I had an ugly face) :D.

Calvin is here. This puppy is awesome.

Ok, here's my haul. Top knife is a super nice little fixed blade by a guy I've never heard of before. Maker's name is Burnley. I bought it for several reasons. One, it's very well ground and the fit and finish is super. Two, it was not a lot of money. Three, it's just plain cool and feels great in my hand any way I hold it. Blade steel is O1, and handles are natural canvas micarta. Overall length is 9.5" with a 4" cutting edge. Nice leather sheath came with it too.

Middle knife is one of R.J. Martin's cool and large honkin folders. Blade is S30V and will shave a piece of paper sideways.

Bottom knife is a super sweet slipjoint folder from Ray Cover Sr. Blade is a hair under 3", with front and rear dovetailed bolsters and some really choice gold lip MOP. Perfect action, zero blade play, bank vault spring.

Mongo, Mschwoeb and Danbo, looks like you all did great.

I heard a lot of folks had a successful show. I seriously wish I could have been up there with all of you clowns (so you could have something to laugh at).

It was a really good show. The highlight for me was to meet Bob Terzuola, What a gentleman. I picked up a Bud Nealy fixed blade with Meier Steel. A fine simple knife with some interesting steel. The makers were all helpful and friendly. My son spent some time talking knife kits and Arc Lites with Darrel Ralph and bought a titanium credit card blade with Ray skin sheath from Pat Crawford...Ed

Boy, I'm up to my eyeballs with photos and images of some SHWEET knives. But.... you will have to wait a while. I just have to keep plugging away at the editing. I was busy, busy, busy, from opening to closing. I barely managed to peek in the show. Damn. :( (It stopped being fun around 1PM on Sunday. Grrrrr.)

Danbo and I spent a bunch of time together, along with Calvin, Ray Cover Jr., David Broadwell, and others. Danbo's RJ is one of my favorites. That wicked machine-grind blade and that sexy overlay material coupled with the cracked black finish on the frame is a weeeeener. So s that Ray Cover Sr. lockback. It is flawless in every way. How does he make them THIS good so chea..., errrr, inexpensively ??? :p

Gus, you LUCKY dawg. :)

Best show I have ever attended or worked, by every measure.

Later.

Coop

I wasnt there but my younger son who goes to law school in Chicago went and got a nice knife in the Emerson lottery. Also when word got around that he was my son, he was treated royally by the Striders, the Emersons, and alot of great folk from a few forums.
The knife community is great.
With Ernie Emerson after getting his knife.
