I just got one of the full sized versions and it is a nice knife but not perfect. I want to know what you think needs to be changed to make it nearly perfect. Here is what I think:

1. The one SS liner should be changed to Ti like the lock side liner. Why not reduce a bit of weight where you can?

2. The clip seems not to hold as securely as other knives. I am not sure if it the clip design or the smooth G-10 that makes it feel like it will slip out of my pocket but I don't like the idea of losing an expensive knife like this just because the clip doesn't hold well.

3. Make it so it can be carried in four positions. Right side tip down happens to be my carry method but I also like tip up on some knives. It is nice to have the choice.

4. It is just a tad too large. Make the handle 1/2" shorter and the blade 1/4" shorter. There is enough room to do this and still have a good hand hold on it.

5. Give the G-10 more grip. The smooth looks good but it is so smooth that I think they went too far. I need more grip than this.

6. Make the clip Ti instead of SS.

Love almost every thing else though. I think this may be one of the best blade shapes I have ever seen on a production knife. It is like a cross between a Manix and a large Calypso. Better than the Manix but not as good as the Calypso IMHO. Love the low ride clip and the liner lock.

The things I suggested wouldn't cost much but would make a huge improvment on the knife. How much would drilling holes for the clip and making it and the one liner out of Ti really cost? SS is not that much cheaper to machine than Ti. Cost of materials would not be much either. At the most, it would be $10 more per knife but probably more like $3-6. I would pay a few extra bucks and so would most people if the result was a lighter and better knife.

Benchmade will not make a tip up liner lock. They consider it a safety issue and I agree with them.

tip up safety issue

I used to feel the same way, but I now carry right front side, which makes tip up perfect as it rides against the seam.

I recently got a 745 and I don't like it. It will be up on the bay soon. It is just too "pretty" for me to use. The handles are too slippery, and I don't like the clip. I like many $40 knives much better. YMMV

I got the large and small in a trade, and when I took them out of the box, I was disappointed in the lock. After tightening them up, the lock is more satisfying. Carried them today, might replace my 710 and 705 as my EDC.

other then both knives saying lum on the side and having a spyderhole there isnt much in common. I "guess" you can say that the blades are similar but thats only in pics if you put them side by side the benchmade is longer and pointier while the spyderco is more leaf-like.

As far as your suggestions i wondered about the one side ss while the locking side is titanium and i read someone where that this was for balance as the ss weighs more.... even so id rather have both be titanium

The G10 looks awesome but it is a little slick and i personally dont see why any production knife cant make the clip reversable for left hand carry. An argument can be made for tip up or tip down but atleast make it reversable.

As far as the titanium clip.... i dont know for sure but i dont think BM has any titanium clips even on the Bradley they use a ss clip.

the sizeyou discribe would put it as a medium dejavoo in between the large and small. I personally like the large size it seems just right to me. Just my opinion though.

It would have made more sense to use stainless steel on the locking side, rather than on the non-locking side. Titanium wears quicker than heat-treated stainless steel.

Maybe some jimping on the spine of the blade, near the handle?

It's an elegant knife, without being overly "scary tactical" in nature.

that would be the Spyderco Lum Chinese Folder

The Benchmade is not a copy of the spyderco. The Spyderco is a copy of the Lum Chinese the Benchmade is a copy of the Lum All Rounder, they are two different knives designed by the same man, Bob Lum.

Thanks for the clarification, perhaps I should have put a question mark at the end of my statement. The Spyderco Lum would be close enough for me.

I like the Dejavoo better than the Spyderco Chinese, and the only thing I would change is the lock.
Give it an Axis-lock and it would be just right.

I was eyeing a mini and beginning to drool. Until I looked at the tip-down (which I can ....handle...but don't like) and the flare on the handle at the blade juncture. I like pocket knives that are roundy on the ends.

I like the flat grind.

But...so far... haven't worked up enough desire to actually ...BUY!

The handle is a bit slippy feeling. But it's such a BITCHIN lookin knife.

:)

In fact, call me goofy, but the handle is the only thing that has kept me from getting a Spydie Manix. Great blade, pokey handle.

I like .. smoooooooooooooooooooooooooooth.

:D
